Introduction
My introduction will discuss the following:
· The characteristics of the Italo-Byzantine style, and why medieval
art was generally abstract and unrealistic
· How art began to change in the Proto-Renaissance period,
influenced by changing ec onomic conditions and the rise of
humanism
Thesis
My thesis will be that this painting exemplifies the transition from the flat
and abstract style of the middle ages towards the more naturalistic
“ Humanist” style of the Proto-Renaissance
Second essay will be based
on a virtual or in-person visit
to the Metropolitan Museum
