1 Course title and credit points
The course is titled Media, Form and Design: An
Introduction to Visual Communication/Mediaform
och design: En introduktion till visuell
kommunikation and awards 7,5 ECTS credits. One
credit point (högskolepoäng) corresponds to one
credit point in the European Credit Transfer System
(ECTS).
2 Decision and approval
This course is established by School of
Technoculture, Humanities and Planning
2007-02-28. The course syllabus is approved by
School of Technoculture, Humanities and Planning
and applies from 2007-07-01.
3 Objectives
The goal of the course is to teach students the basics
of visual communication and design with a focus on
the relationship between the producer and receiver,
Students learn the fundamentals of artistic design
through a study of artistic movements, elements of
color, typography, layout and material construction.
4 Content
Students study samples of visual art, graphic design
and design history and work to create their own
artifacts through hands-on workshops and
individual exercises. Students communicate and
synthesize their knowledge with a final art project,
presented orally to the class, that incorporates the
elements they study in the course.
5 Aims and learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student will be able
to:
• generate their own artifacts informed by
principles of effective design
• discuss their own work in relation to principles of
visual communication and design
• identify and discuss key elements in different

artistic movements
• present critical insights in oral presentations
• critique and discuss elements of design in their
work and that of their classmates’
• recognize, ,assess, and reproduce basic elements of
graphic design (including color, typography, layout,
and material construction)
6 Generic skills
The following generic skills are trained in the
course:
• Reflection about rhetorical design and its
application to practice
• Creative design and artistic expression
• Oral presentation skills
• Critical communication skills in English
7 Learning and teaching
Teaching consists of lectures, seminars, and hands-
on workshops. Lectures and seminars introduce
students to key concepts and fundamentals while
workshops give students opportunities to create
their own artifacts under supervision. Work is
completed both in-and out-of-class. Students
communicate their understanding of design through
the production of their own artifacts informed by
course content.
The teaching language is English.
8 Assessment and grading
Examination of the course

1 Both the Swedish grading system u-vg and the
ECTS- system are applied. ECTS grades are as
follows: A= Excellent (Utmärkt), B = Very Good
(Mycket bra), C = Good (Bra), D = Satisfactory
(Tillfredsställande), E = Sufficient (Tillräckligt), FX =
Fail, (Otillräckligt), F = Fail (Otillräckligt). The
course assessment comprises exams of various
forms and continuous assessment of students’
assignments and class participation. Participation in
seminars and lectures is compulsory. Submission
and attendance policies are posted on program
website Students with a passing grade can request a
course diploma.
The course will be graded Fail, Pass or Pass with
Distinction.
On request grades according to ECTS will be given.
9 Course evaluation
The course coordinator is responsible for
systematically gathering feedback from the students
in course evaluations and making sure that the
results of these feed back into the development of
the course.
10 Prerequisites
The special prerequisites for this course, besides
basic eligibility for university studies, are a pass
mark from the following upper secondary school
courses: English B.
11 Field of education and subject area
The course is part of the field of education and is
included in the subject area media technology.
12 Restrictions regarding degree
The course cannot form part of a degree with
another course, the content of which completely or
partly corresponds with the contents of this course.
13 Additional information
The course is part of the undergraduate program
Literature, Culture, and Digital Media. The course is
also open to non-program students.
The course is taught in English.
