Editor's Notes

  • #2: Ask partners to use the chart to explain what they know about analysis and synthesis.
  • #3: Looping - to review Analysis and then to push it further. Analyze- what are the constituent parts that make up the image? Go one at a time. Notice it’s two in the first two images, but in third image, we have chimeras with multiple constituent parts.
  • #5: I can use this to practice. Synthsis is about maching stuff together, about combining elements to create something new. Quick define. Then use image to explain. In this case, we see a TV character, Frasier, combined with the lead monster from the movie Hellraiser. Faser is an uptight psychiatrist, pretty vain. Pinhead is pretty evil, too. Taken together, we have “hellfraiser, an uptight egotistical psychiatrist who gets up to lots of bedevilment!
  • #6: Kermit - a frog, happy. Tarot Card, representing someone on a quest fo knoweldge. The Kermit, then, is a happy, optimistic seaker of knowledge.
  • #7: Van Gogh is a famous artist, plagued by mental illness. The face-bugger is a horror image from movie Alien. It hugs your face and implants eggs in you. What’s the new meaning?
  • #8: Photosynthesis: CO2, + H20 + Sunlight creates energy and O2 What is syntehsized? Baking - different itmes top create something new . . . What’s changed, what becomes? Wardrobes - mixing and matching. What’s changed? What’s altered? How does combining, mashing up, putting together, alter the contituent parts, how does stuff, in general, change.
  • #9: (1) Go slide by slide. Ask them to ANALYZE - to see what was synthesized . . .go backwards. What do you observe that Codices, Aztec art - warrior- bravery, war is timeless. Hindu and Renaissance Portaiture Beauty . . . beauty? Japanese Classical + comic book Heroes Indian iconography + Powerpuff Girls (Him!) Matches him with a deity? Tells us that TV cartoons STORY telling - Ask, how does synthesizing change, alter, complicate, or otherwise “mess” with the original ideas? What ideas did the one have that the other didn’t; how does the synthesis change meaning . . . Disfrasimso?
  • #10: Review writer’s notebook rules. Take a break, or dive into next of slides.
  • #11: Brainstorm. Braindump. Show them the next map. Themes to theme. Character to real life person. A concept or idea to a concrete example. A theme in fiction to an theory. An image to a song. A song to an idea. An idea or concept to personal life. A personal incident to a theory. A lived experience of personal observation with an idea from school. Compile!
  • #12: Review writer’s notebook rules. After wards, ahvge them read the before and after to a partner. Take a break, or dive into next of slides.
