Salicylic acid and ethanoic anhydride were reacted in the presence of phosphoric acid to prepare aspirin. Salicylic acid (2g), ethanoic anhydride (5cm3), and phosphoric acid (5 drops) were heated for 10 minutes, then cooled with ice. The crude aspirin crystals were filtered and recrystallized with ethanol to obtain purified aspirin. The percentage yield of aspirin was calculated to be 82% based on the theoretical and actual yields.
