SyrGuide is a collaborative project from the
Syracuse University Writing Program.

SyrGuide was created and is maintained by
students in order to solve the question of
“Where’s the good stuff?”

While there is A LOT of GREAT information on
the local Syracuse area, it is not easy to access
from all platforms.

A simple and minimal design was originally in
place—

however it did not function as inviting or useful
across platforms.

There are three key artifacts that were decided
upon to bring attention and traffic to SyrGuide:

Overall Design
SyrGuide runs off of WordPress, so the best way
to change the overall look of the site was to pick
a new theme.

The dark background helps bring attention to the
logo and the content.

The selected theme is still minimal, but it functions
better on devices besides a basic browser.

Menu Consolidation
Consolidating the menu aids to how SyrGuide
performs and functions on different platforms.

“About” “Contributors” and “Style Guide” were
moved to the banner.

“Arts” and “Fun” were combined into “Arts &
Entertainment.”

“Shopping” was given it’s own tab.

“Writing at SU” was going to be moved to the
banner, but after testing, was left on the main
menu, as that’s where spacing work best.

Promotion
A part of the reason that SyrGuide doesn’t get
much traffic is because not many know of its
existence.

Keeping with the simple theme of the site, various
flyers were created to generate conversation and
traffic.

There were four initial options that were created:

Each had a variation that included the website and
the logo.

Another option that includes the simplicity of the
previous designs was made—

This design added a bit more information about
the use of the site

All designs are to be presented as options for use
in promotion of SyrGuide, as well as the
updated website.
