The Systems development life cycle (SDLC) is a conceptual model that is used in the project
management which describes the stages involved in the information system development project,
from an initial feasibility study through maintenance of the completed application. SDLC is used to
correct problems in existing system, and to improve the system quality and structure. It certainly
makes the process easy for building a system and helps to reduce failures such as unclear objectives,
possibility of not meeting the user needs, or cost overruns. We can generally consider the SDLC in
five phases. These 5 phases are repeated until the desired or efficient output is achieved. The 5
phases of system development life cycle are:
1. Planning
2. Analysis
3. Design
4. Implementation
5. Maintenance

development life cycle. Although the two processes are different due to what each is used for and
the activities associated with them, Michael Whitman and Herbert Mattord claim "the overall
methodology is the same." (2012, pg. 26). Since a business, company, or an organization with a
network must consider the many technologies and methodologies available today, for an effective
security control plan, one would be remiss not to follow the SecSDLC phases:
1. The Investigation phase is engaged with "a directive from upper management, dictating the
process, outcomes, and goals of the project, as well as its budget and other constraints" (Whitman &
Mattord, 2012, pg. 26). During this phase, all interested parties discuss whether the organization has
the funds and commitment to move forward with a potential plan.
2. The Analysis phase is engaged when documentation from the investigation phase is reviewed.
The team will analyze current policies and threats, and "relevant legal issues that could affect the
design of the security solution" (Whitman & Mattord, 2012, pg. 27) as well.
3. The Logical Design phase is engaged when the analysis of the plan is complete. This phase is
where the team "creates and develops the blueprints for information security" (Whitman & Mattord,
2012, pg. 27). This phase also considers significant procedures that may impact plan

with respect to the IIS and its data. In addition, the security policy should include appropriate
procedures to ensure local site data and software are properly managed. The IIS applications such as
general reader, general user, and site manager need to be created to support the objectives of the

In the planning phase, a Project Charter is provided to all management, stakeholders and those with
significant authority over the company. The Project Charter essentially defines the project. It
contains the objectives of the project describing the deliverables, while also containing a description
of the criteria used to assess when each section is completed, risk assessments and identifies
stakeholders and management (Documentation Consultants, n.d.). The Project Management Plan is
also produced during the planning phase. It contains the project's schedule and milestones, required
resources and cost estimations and budgets.
To start off the planning you must study the current system with the people involved (such as
clients, employees or management). These groups would have meetings to discuss areas of the

Systems Development Life Cycle Baderman Island will have to go through a specifications and
metrics process to be able to implement successfully the new enterprise technology. The company
will go through the systems development life cycle (SDLC) when implementing the new
technology. "SDLC is the process of developing information systems through investigation,
analysis, design, implementation and maintenance. SDLC is also known as information systems
development or application development. SDLC is a systems approach to problem solving and is
made up of several phases, each comprised of multiple steps" (Webopedia, 2008, para.2). The
company will go through many SDLC associated activities, such as, planning, analysis, design,
development, testing, implementation and maintenance. The planning phase is an important phase
for the company as it helps determine a solid development plan of the new technology. The planning
phase will address defining the system to be developed, setting the project scope and developing he
project plan. Baderman Island will identify and determine the system which is required to support
the company's strategic goals. The company will track the proposed system and prioritize based on
business impact and critical success factors. Setting the project scope will clearly define the high

The third step is the design stage which involves the requirements for the design of the technology,
and these include data layers, programming language, and the data services. This stage helps in
implementing a design that highlights the coverage of the business logic that was analyzed at the
previous stage. The next step is the coding which involves writing the sources of the actual code that
will be used in the implementation of the business logic, the models, and the integrations of the
services that had been generated earlier. The fifth stage is a testing step where testers such as beta
testers are solving issues that arise out of the application (Petersen & Baca, 2009). However, this
stage usually tends to repeat the coding stage so that there can be proper squashing of the detected
bugs. The final stage is the operation stage where the application is considered complete and can be
deployed. Besides, this stage involves maintenance and support in ensuring the application remains
