The Storage IT market in Israel The Storage market in Israel - 130M$ (HW external disk , SW) not including services. Worldwide Market for External Disk Storage Systems (IDC) - 17B$ Israel vs. The world Microsoft Smaller scale but rather complicated Cheap labor Competition – generally lower prices Support cost is higher Less regulated High Tech
Storage Size and Growth in Selected Industries Industry 2007 Size Planned Growth Defense 500TB-1000TB 30%- 50% Finance 60TB-200TB 40% - 50% Health 20TB-50TB 60%-100% Manufacturing – Retail 20TB-30TB 20%-50% Telco 600TB-1 PETA 30% Governmental 5TB-10TB 25%-100% High Tech 20TB-100TB 20%-30%
STKI RT – Backup to disk User is keeping backup tapes on disk for 2 weeks . Only few of the tapes will finally move to “real” tapes. Implementing the project was not easy . For copying virtual tapes to “real” tapes the client had to buy another module from the Backup SW company. User is saving backup by using NETAPP’s snapshots replicating the snapshots for two locations. ROI and TCO of Backup to disk projects do not consider the extra electricity cost.
STKI RT – Backup to disk User has purchased Dilligent hoping to get 1:10 reduction ratio. The main reason was reducing the number of tapes . User is using Quest’s LightSpeed for faster (x5!) MSSQL backup windows. Clients consider De-Dup as important technology that will be part of the Backup SW suite (Symantec-Puredisk, EMC-Avamar). But integrating the De-Dup functionality will take some time. Client expect De-Dup technologies to enter the production environment .
STKI RT – Storage technologies According to users configuration and management High End Storage (DS8000, DMX, TAGMA, XP) is demanding comparing the easy to manage Midrange Storage. However, storage replication is much more mature in High End Storage. Users had some issues when replicating large volumes in Midrange Storage . Also, Highend storage is more robust regarding up time for both planned and unplanned downtime. Midrange storage upgrades requires more downtime. Several clients have mentioned XIV for its excellent performance (even for IO intensive applications) easy configuration and management.
STKI RT – Storage technologies However, some clients have raised the issue of certifications in XIV environment One user is using 50 ISCSI connection (via Cisco’s MDS). Another user has mentioned issue with the combination ISCSI and CIFS. Users are experimenting startups. Examples – Veronis, Zettapoint.
STKI RT – Organizational Structure User has mentioned the evolution of the storage group. Untill not long ago the Storage group was part of the Unix group. Since Storage volumes has grown and also the Windows group is growing, they formed independent storage group. But what is the boundary between the Storage and System Group? Who is responsible for the Switch? For the Drivers? Also, when implementing Oracle RAC on Linux environment, the recommend (by Oracle) file environment is ASM (Automatic Storage Management ). This takes some of the responsibilities from the Storage group to the DBMS group.
STKI RT – Storage growth Storage is booming. Many clients that have planned a storage deal for 3 years need to buy more storage after 2 years. The Health industry is especially in need for storage: New PAX projects The Health industry keeps lots of information for lots of time (practically not deleting anything) .
STKI RT Other Trends Storage virtualization (moving volumes between different storage manufacturers) is needed for highly agile environments (ISV’s) Storage virtualization is not considered mature for production environments Storage SW pricing issue –having to pay for the entire machine although the SW is used for only part of the storage Technology issue – performance of storage is decreasing when the HW almost full Encryption in LTO4 Backup of VMWARE ESX environment
STKI RT Other Trends - SRM Capacity is increasing and different storage tiers \ different storage platforms are evolving. Storage Resource Management: “A central repository of information collected regularly from the continuum of storage assets, combined with analytical tools that allow organizations to characterize, optimize, and forecast storage asset requirements.” SAN Management Tools: “Software applications that identify, allocate, configure, and deploy heterogeneous storage assets.”

Thin Provisioning Thin provisioning is a mechanism that applies to large-scale centralized computer disk storage systems, SANs, and storage virtualization systems. Thin provisioning allows space to be easily allocated to servers, on a just-enough and just-in-time basis. Over-allocation or over-subscription is a mechanism that allows server applications to be allocated more storage capacity than has been physically reserved on the storage array itself. Source: Wikipedia
Market Status and Trends Example of best storage deals 6 months ago (raw storage including software): High End Storage, 5 year warranty HW and SW – 7K$ per TB. Midrange 5K$ per TB, SATA 3K$ per TB It is a possible to get agreement with the storage supplier of Storage prices (HW + SW) reduction of 15% to 25% a year HW prices are going down 35%
Market Status and Trends DRP BCP The second Lebanon war has raised the BCP\DRP issue. Organizations realize that all of Israel might be under missile threat This has two implications: Better shelters are considered for Data Centers Out of Israel BCP\DRP solutions are considered Interesting project – EDS at FIBI with HDS – DRP outside Israel with 10MB/SEC line and journaling Interesting new concept by Israeli Startup – Continuity Software CDP – new flavor for DRP alternative
Continuous data protection (CDP) “ Any PIT” recovery Some CDP flavors: Replicate all writes (complete copy of Server) Replicated only application related writes – for easier “bare metal restore” Considerations Introduces a new process into your backup strategy Typically requires as much as 1.5x your current capacity Primary storage Secondary storage CDP appliance/server Server Control data Data Backup/copy data Source: www.forrester.com/Events/Content/0,5180,-1277,00.ppt with modification

Virtualization and P2V recovery Scenario – Phase 1 : Initial P2V Your Servers are : Protected Ready for Patches / Upgrade tests
Storage Ratios Number of TB (Raw) per Storage Staff Member (including backup): Worldwide – 40TB raw per FTE In Israel from 14TB per FTE (in small organization with 7TB) to 145TB per FTE in large Telco organization. Median is 1 FTE for 30TB raw (including backup). Storage without backup is up to 250TB per FTE In the larger organizations the storage administrators are not responsible for checking the logs of the backup SW Source: STKI
The Infrastructure Manager Radar Interest using Implementing VTL DeDuplication CDP Different storage tiers Email Archiving File Archiving - HSM DBMS on NAS Laptop Backup SATA Users should redefine their Backup\Restore\ DRP policies based on new technologies! Object Storage Basic Snapshots Snapshots for Exchange, DBMS , etc.
