Task 1
- 1. Benjamin Karrass Units 4, 5, 12, 31 Task 1 Client information The council of the London Borough of Redbridge have created a Brief and issued it to the youth of the borough. The London Borough of Redbridge is based in the North East of London, the council is administering its headquarters at redbridge town hall in Ilford. The Redbridge mayor at the moment is Linda Huggett, she was elected at the Annual Council meeting on Thursday 11 May 2017. Redbridge counselors are selected to represent their part of the council, the counselors are usually members of a political party. Some counselors are not part of any party and are called independents. Local counselors are responsible for making decisions on behalf of their community, the decisions are usually based on the best interests of the public. The estimated population of Redbridge at the moment is 296,800, this is an increase of 3,800 since the 30th of June 2014. An estimated of 67,500 people aged between 0-15 are children. 193,000 people aged between 16 and 64 years of age are working, and 36,200 people aged 65 and upwards have retired in redbridge from this day. The project we are working on will be based in Barkingside, this is a borough of Redbridge. In Barkingside there are three counselors all part of the same political party (conservatives), Councillor Ashley Stephen Kissin, Councillor Karen Packer and Councillor Keith Prince. They all have their designated responsibilities and roles to work on during the year. For example, Councillor Keith Prince has the responsibilities of Chairman of the Transport Committee, Deputy Chairman of the Audit Panel, Member of the Budget and Performance Committee and Member of the GLA Oversight Committee. As we are working on a project in barkingside, i've looked up the rising crime rates of barkingside and found that both acid attacks and knife crimes are a problem in this area so for my documentary i’m going to discuss on how to fix these problems. Structure of Brief The structure of the brief includes competition between thousands of young people in the Borough of Redbridge. The competition is to produce a short film about issues affecting an area in Redbridge, the best short film produced will be broadcasted on TV. The people making the short film can make it how they like, the projects is informal as Redbridge want the producers to have creative control over the short film. Not everyone needs to participate in creating a short film, it is a free advertisement to show off their work in the community. During the competition, there is no guarantee of winning, but it allows people to create short films to advertise themselves in the borough of what they can do in the media industry. No contract is

For example for my short film i will be specifically filming in barkingside and this is a part of the redbridge borough so i would find out information on the main issues in this area. I would not be forced to create the short film but i have chosen to create one. When creating the short film its an informal agreement meaning the people making the short film abide by any rules allowing them to have full control of their product and can be as creative as they want to be. Usually when involved in a competition it would encourage people to work harder and make the best product they can. It can motivate the people involved and work harder for the end result of being broadcasted on TV. Competitions usually help young people get ready for the world ahead as when they leave school they need to always have the mindset of being in a competition, to always be on top when working. Doing competitions like these helps the people involved to learn new skills and also create work to add to their portfolio to use when looking at universities or jobs. Purpose of the Project The social action project is a multi step process which young members of the Redbridge borough address an issue they care about, they talk about solutions on how to fix the issues in the community. The purpose of the project is to raise awareness of certain areas and of the crimes of what occurs in those areas. Once a project has been aired on TV it allows people all over the world to see and examine what it's like in certain areas of the world. One purpose is for surveillance to find different information about certain areas of the world. For example there might be issues such as knife crimes and burglary in the area. During the video we create we would find ways to motivate and convince the community to make it a better place and to get involved with stopping crimes in the area. The purpose of these projects are to raise awareness of what issues are being brought up in the borough. Usually the short films would be ways of helping the borough and how to stop the problems from occurring. From watching the short films the public will become more aware of what's actually happening around them, this makes the public change their attitudes and behaviour in the borough of Redbridge. The short films usually have a positive impact towards the community who view the project.

Benjamin Karrass Units 4, 5, 12, 31 Most groups which create the projects are made for their local areas, a lot of social action projects are also created to be aired live on television for a worldwide view to see what's going on in that area. There are many social projects made by different companies to be aired, an example of a social project is one named panorama by the BBC. the programme first aired in 1953 and it focuses on the issues on what is happening in the world. Its different to a local project where it only issues what's happening in a certain area. One episode aired by the BBC on 19th of july 2017, the episode was named London tower fire: Britain's shame. The episode was about the fire that started fourth floor of Grenfell Tower that engulfed almost the entire 24-storey building at shocking speed. Firefighters battling the fire say they have never seen anything like it before. The purpose of the episode was to get the people around the world aware of what's happened over in a different location and to show that as a community people can be stronger and fix things. The episode made people aware of the damage the fire has caused and of the damage it has caused people. The community came together to play a football match and raise money for the people who lost their homes in the fire. The purpose of the documentary is to show people how dangerous and how easy it is for fires to rise and ruin people's lives. The BBC aired this episode as people can relate to it. Anyone can have the same problem that can escalate quickly and people need to be aware of what can happen to them. Another BBC panorama episode is named Manchester Attack: Terror at the Arena, the episode is about the attacks that occurred in manchester. Having this episode produced by the BBC allows people to see what has happened to people over the world. The program looks at the effects it has on the people in manchester. The main purpose is to make the people of manchester become stronger and beat the terrorism that is happening in the world at the moment. People who haven't heard for the incident may not understand the consequences of what people have occured and having this show allows them to view the terror. As the attack happened during the concert it allowed people all over the world to get involved, this included the artist Ariana
- 4. Benjamin Karrass Units 4, 5, 12, 31 Grande donating £500,000 to the community. Ariana Grande got people together to perform a concert for the people involved in the attacks. This shows that the people of manchester came together and showed the world that they are strong and greater than the terrorism that occurs in the world. Lastly, another example of a projects is based on Channel 4 named Dispatches programme. Not all episodes of the show are based in the country such as an episode name “Escaping Isis” this episode is about the brutal regime suffered by millions of women living under Isis, and the extraordinary story of a secret underground network trying to save them. This allows the people across the world to see and realise the state of how people are living in different countries. Some social action projects that are based in certain areas, for the community may be about keeping the streets clean whether it may be littering or recycling. The purpose of the project would be to make people more aware of how they keep the area clean, this will allow them to work together as a community and make their area a better place to live. Raising awareness of these issues in the community would often allow people to understand and change their ways in the community and they would start making it a better living space. The social action projects in the community should also strengthen people in the area to come together and unite as one to stop crime rates and other things such as knife crimes, burglaries and littering. Opportunities Offered As well as creating a projects for the community, the experience offers people huge amounts of opportunities including learning and discovering new and important things about your area. Doing the project allows people to expand their knowledge on the current affairs in the area. Another good reason why creating a 10 minute video about the area allows us to use it in our portfolio and onto our CV for others to view. Having this onto my portfolio allows employers to view my work and allow me to create contacts and maybe get a job in the media industry. As i’m hoping to go to university it gives me an advantage of when i start studying, as i would have already planned, produced and worked on challenging projects at the school. Doing a social action project will allow me to gain all new sets of skills whether it may be learning more about my community or even communication skills when talking to others in the area during production. My social skills will be improved as i’m working with other people. I will need to create a questionnaire and go out into the community and ask people questions, this
- 5. Benjamin Karrass Units 4, 5, 12, 31 is something that allows me to improve my social skills. This includes talking to people i've never spoken to before. Another skill this improves can be my confidence when speaking to other people. Rather than being nervous when meeting and speaking to new people i would be more confident and professional for the project. Being able to stay confident is a huge skill as it can benefit me in a later time such as when i’m at university or when i may start working in public. It allows me to be ready for different life situations which may be benefited with me having confidence. Another skill that i can improve on during the project is both time and management as i need to have the project due and complete for a certain date. Having this allows me to plan ahead of what i’m going to do task wise and when i’m going to do these for. Other stages during the production such as planning, filming and research is very important as i need to have these to be able to complete my project. If i have good time and management skills it shows that during the production everything will be able to run smoothly and be finished on time. As i need to submit the project i would have a deadline for the final project and with these improved skills it will help me get it done on time for the due date Redbridge has set. My practical skills will also be improved while creating the project as i would need to know how to film and edit, also pre production will allow me to improve my practical skills as i need to find out information about the area we are focusing on. Going out to find information allows me to improve my research skills as well as my practical as i would have to film my way and use devices such as a microphone. Other practical skills such as creating a script and a budget for the project will help me improve my practical skills. I would also be improving my teamwork and cooperation skills as i would be working in a group during the project. I’ve created other projects throughout the years at school such as a horror trailer and short film. This shows that i’ve had experience with creating projects but i can also gain more skills from a different type of production. I’ve never created a documentary in media so doing this will be different and will allow me to improve in areas that i’ve not worked on such as social skills. No matter how good the project turns out people will find it hard and find obstacles that will make the project harder to create but doing this and overcoming the obstacles allows you to gain problem solving skills, having these skills are vital and useful because in the future when you start working having theses problem solving skills will be useful as you would be able to solve other problems quickly so your work can be finished quicker. When things go wrong it won't be that difficult for you to overcome them as you have done other problem solving tasks in the past. Having all these skills will help me further in the future. As the project is a competition you want it to look unique and as i would develop all different skills it will allow me to improve my project and make it different to others. This makes my project different allowing my group to have a chance to win, this will help me push my creative skills to the maximum.
