Opportunities & Constraints
Task 2
What creative and technical opportunities can you see in this project? How
could you challenge yourself creatively in this project?
The creative opportunities I will face in this project are that of thinking, designing and producing a unique can to fit a certain target market.
Doing this individually rather working in groups like in previous work such as recipe cards will be the challenge due to the heavy workload. In
more specific terms, the creative aspects that this project will entail are that of working with Adobe Photoshop to a high standard, Thinking
of a good enough name for the can that reflects well on both the theme and the demographic it is aimed towards.
A creative side will be brought out of my work much more in this project due to the need for thinking about colours, fonts and sizes as well
as branding, slogans and witty titles.
The can itself is not the only form of creativeness in the unit, with advertising, web banners a TV storyboard to be made. The advertising
side will need a great attention to detail on what the image looks like, due to it being one of the main aspects of the ‘business’ you are
representing. Should it not correspond with the can then it will lack professionalism and put off the target market.
The colour scheme is one of the main focuses to the creative aspect, due to a shade being needed that reflects who the business wants to
target. If this fails to entice them then the can will not sell and therefore the unit will be seen as unsuccessful.
I can challenge myself in this unit to expand my knowledge on Photoshop and be willing to learn new techniques in order to produce an
Energy Drink design that looks suitable and is of a great standard.
I am also wanting to develop from previous tasks where I feel I have been slow to show development from the creative aspect and I feel this
unit could provide me the chance to show that my typography can be as good as my idea generation. In relation to previous tasks, I feel it
took a long duration to find a design that was suitable to whom, we as a group wanted to aim towards. Identifying a target demographic
early and working towards that is my goal in this project.
The technical side I want to develop on Photoshop is that of Rotoscoping images and applying light or removing it from imagery. In the
project I also want to take my idea generation but using it on a TV Storyboard and creating it through Photoshop rather than a hand made
creation.
How could the skills you are using and developing here be useful in a
professional context?
The skills I will I use in this project that can be applied in a professional manner would be
that of, Time Keeping. Having a deadline to the brief and the need to produce it for the
client. This is vital in the media industry and without good knowledge or organisation, you
will not get as far as you want.
As a Journalist for example, they will need to research in depth about the subject, then
draw up plans to produce some work and later complete it all within a time scale.
The skills of researching, in this project or any other are important due to having that
understanding of not enough which can harm the look of your work as the people you are
aiming at will not agree, or too much which will prevent you from other aspects and put
you under enormous pressure to reach the deadline for the client.
What opportunities for designing for different media does this project give
you? Which final product type interests you the most and why?
This project gives me the tools I need to apply the knowledge in any aspect of the media
industry, this is because it challenges both Visual and text based work from you. This forces
you to put real thought into the design and use a creative edge which other units have
lacked, plus the use of text can be important as it is the quality rather than the quantity in
this case, using clever titles for advertisements or witty slogans can be as important as the
design itself.
The final product type that interests me is that of the Extreme sport type energy drinks
such as Red Bull or Monster.
This is because I feel their approach to advertising is great due to the amount of their own
target market being reached out to. Using Athletes in their respected fields to wear the logo
of the brand is a great way to promote the drink, and as the majority of that demographic
watch them on a regular basis this provides a constant and reliable source of advertising.
Having a drink that advertises so well cannot fail in my opinion. Using Endorsements and
other extreme stunts are unusual and sometimes have critics, however it is the best way to
get a name among the best energy drinks and develop a greater market share.
1)What timescale have you got for this project? How could this impact your work?
2) Are there any resources you will need for this project that you will not be
provided with? How could this affect your project? What can you do about this?
1)I have been given 6 weeks to produce the work given on the brief, as one was already
taken for the research side, this leaves me with the remaining 5 to produce an energy drink
that is of a high standard. This will not impact my work due to a plan being put in place with
a contingency to meet the workload given. It will require more effort as I am working
individually in this project, however I feel I can meet the requirements set.
2) To produce a well structured project I would ideally like to take images of people taking
part in extreme sports and having those featured on advertisements, potentially a video of
the stunts in question to features on the website that is to be created, However being
realistic and looking at the time given, it is not possible to creative images of such sorts.
This will affect my project as the imagery will not be of a top quality standard, however
using slightly less extreme sports or using sourced images can help provide the client with a
greater understanding on what its is you are trying to get across through the drink and what
someone who consumes it will feel they can do.
What restraints could be imposed by an organisation such as the Advertising
Standards Authority (ASA)? How could this impact your project?
The restraints that the ASA could have on my work are that of preventing me from advertising or locating promotion of
the Energy drink near children.
The Rule ’05 Children’ on the official website states that the advertising should not be putting pressure on the children
or use ‘pester power’ to entice them to the product.
This means that in order to promote the drink I need to do it through the sports that the target market plays rather than
on public display.
Using ‘Red Bull and Monsters’ idea of product placement on the actual sports or events is a great way to advertise the
Energy drink.
Another restraint that could be imposed upon by the ASA is that of the Rule ’04 Harm and Offense’ This could be put
into action if the advertisements or packaging contains Photosensitive imagery.
I need to work within the rules of the Advertising Standards authority as this may harm the reputation of the Energy
drink I am designing should there by and way to complain about the way it has been made.
There are many more restraints put in place to stop offense or harm to the viewers of products. Such as the Sales and
Promotion rule number 08, this rules shows the guidance you must follow should you wish to advertise a prize or ay
incentive to buy the energy drink or any other product.
These all affect my planning of the energy drink, as I need to take all of these rules into account and work from them.
