Task 2 – NME analysis
By Lewis Whyte
Front Cover
Connotation – the background
of the front cover is a wall of
graffiti. This is stereotypical to
the genre of music ; the idea of
rap being about being
rebellious therefore the graffiti
shows this as its illegal
(rebellious). Furthermore
relating to the party scene
further relating to the genre of
the music from the cover
image – Dizzee Rascal.
Genre – Music magazine due to
the cover giving hints. For
example the cover lines have
names of music bands therefore
showing us the genre as we then
know from the cover lines that
the information inside is to do
with music.
Main image – the main image
is of the artist Dizzee Rascal
which is chosen as it relates to
the audiences genre of
preferred music. The image is
important as the artist is
wearing stereotypical rap
clothing which appeals to the
audience as they understand
that the clothing is relatable to
the music genre itself.
Cover lines – main ; informal
language used ‘man’ appeals to the
audience as its relatable to rap
language. The cover lines match the
colour scheme of red, black and
white. Furthermore there is a pull
quote which implies the magazine
has an interview from the artist.
Masthead – the mast head is left
sided which follows the
conventional codes of a magazine
layout – from left to right
following the eye line.
Model – the audience of the
magazine is largely male
which is why the magazine
cover is a male as its able to
appeal due to the same
gender, the artist is also
casually dressed which
enables the audience to
identify as its able to connote
culture, identity and music
style.
Layout – the layout of the
magazine front cover is rather
messy , this isn't conventional so it
makes the cover look
unstructured . An example is the
tilted text which essentially shows
that the text is disfigured and off.
Colour scheme – Red, white and
black – shows quite a masculine
scheme as these colours are quite
dark and show no emotion
therefore relating too the
stereotypical male – bald and
strong.
Target audience -
Gender – male, Age –
20’s. Relates to students
more as the genre of
music is suggesting being
rebellious – rap and how
it usually implies breaking
and going against rules.
Strap line – strap line says
that this issue is special –
this may bed due to the
featured artist, recent
breakout, big and popular
artist.
Rule of thirds – Not standard
as the thirds seems to be
placed in rows going across not
down which isn't conventional
for a magazine
Contents page
Font – the font of the heading is
sans serif as it’s a modern, bald and
chunky font which works as a
heading as its able to stand out.
However is also relatable to the
target audience as its modern.
Font – the font of the main text is
serif, this works well as the font is
rather modern which is suitable as
the magazine is modern which
enables it to relate to the
audience due to it being for
younger people.
Borders – the border of the photo
on the musical flight case shows
the image to be a ‘physical photo’
this is because there is a white
border as if the picture is a
physical , real hand held image.
This is good as its on a musical
flight case which is used to tour
and physical photos would be
stuck on them for memories.
Language – The language
used on the contents page
seems some what
humorous, For example the
first sentence ‘thank god
the sun has disappeared ,
eh? Which shows some
informality within the
language. This relates to the
target audience as they're
quite young and are
probably not speaking 100%
proper English , there may
be jokes and slang used
within their language a lot.
Language – The language has some
alliteration ; ‘masterclass of
messiness’ which shows the
entertainment side of the
magazine, trying to create humour.
Language – pronouns
have been used ‘we’ to
make the audience feel
part of the magazine as
they have been some
what involved and
spoken to about being a
group with the writer
Language – Verbs have been
used, for example ‘play and
listen’ which makes the action
sound more realist are you are
able to do it.
Page numbers – page
numbers are black over a
white background which is
useful as it makes the page
numbers stand out over the
rest of the information as
they're the most important –
where what article is etc.
Main image - main image is a
musical flight case as its able to
relate to the purpose of the
magazine which is music therefore
allowing the audience to relate
since its about music and what
there interested in.
Double page spread article
Layout – the layout of the double page
spread is basic. The pages have been split
quite clearly as one side is an image and the
other is text.
Image – the left side of the page
is an image of the cover star
Dizzee Rascal. His clothing is still
red black and white which shows
a clear and consistent colour
scheme throughout the
magazine. Furthermore the
graffiti on the wall sticks with
the rebellious theme of the
magazine due to the rap genre
and how it relates to breaking
rules and being rebellious.
Text and image – The image and
text relate and link well as the
article is talking about the image (
Dizzee Rascal ) Therefore helps the
audience understand the article as
the image gives more detail on the
artist himself as we can see what
he's like i.e. his actions – graffiti
and how he dresses.
Impression – the overall
impression connotes that
Dizzee Rascal is a rap artist
as the photo essentially
connotes that his singing
links in with his rebellious
lifestyle of breaking rules
i.e. from the graffiti .
The font- is quite bold and chunky this
has been done as it makes the
importance of the tile stand out to the
audience.
