Task 5: Genre and style
1. Choose 3 genresyoucouldpossiblydoandwrite downstrengthsandweaknessesof each.
Rock magazine
Strengths:
 Easy to reproduce. Genre and style of the magazine is easy to pick up patterns and to replicate
them in my own design.
 Does not requireintensiveprops / mise-en-scene. Mainly consistsof one or more people holding
guitars with gloomy or distracted expressions on their face.
 Design conveys the genre well through colour and images. Mostly dark colours and edgy imagery.
The mise-en-scene follows the denotations of the genre easily and therefore allows replication to
be easier.
Weaknesses:
 Doesn’t allowfor much emotion to be portrayed (Imagery and colour etc.). Dark colours don’tallow
for much emotion to be portrayed.
 Simplisticdesign.Mainly has a singlecolour background with minimal post-processingon itsuch as a
‘drop-shadow’ and a gradient on the background. Can be created quickly, however it lacks detail.
 May require multiplepeople for a band in imagery. Usually has a band or band member on the front
cover holdinginstruments such as guitars (mostcommonly). Also usually haveshots of band members
lookingdown at the camera with stern expressions on their faces.
Jazz
Strengths:
 Allows the magazineto be more conveyingof emotions through lightingetc. Jazz usually has mood
lightings of yellows. The mise-en-scene follows the denotations of smooth lightingand the use of the
background.
 Requires potentially the leastamount of people to pose. One or more people usually holding
instruments such as saxophones in a pose that conveys a largeamount of emotion towards the music
genre.
 The magazine can be more formal and laid back and appear more casual. Theaudience of Jazz music
tends to be stereotyped as laid back peoplewho justsitback and listen to music whilstthe world goes
by. The magazinetherefore has denotations that could connote a relaxed and laid back personality of
the audience.
Weaknesses:
 Props may be hard to get hold of. Mise-en-scene may be difficult. Jazzequipment is moderately
expensive and easy to damage. Props for a jazzmagazine would be harder to get than other
magazines.
 Not as wide of an audienceas Rock or Pop etc. Not as popular.
Patrick Carson AS Media Studies 25/11/15
Rap/Hip-Hop
Strengths:
 Has potentially the largestaudience. Most popular due to range of sub-genres & audience.
 Has a largerange of mise-en-scene abilities such as useof props and lighting. Rap/Hip-hop utilizes
background and natural lightingto convey the genre. Mise-en-scene imagery usually containsa male
in a formal pose with a smileno their face.
 Doesn’t require allotof post-processing.Relies heavily on background. Little to no post-processingis
needed. More than likely the only post-processingwould be in enhancements of the image and on
the text of the magazine.
 Requires the leastamount of people to pose for imagery. Hip-hop and Rap magazines usually haveon
person posingin an informal way with a smileon their face. Easiestto get people to pose for as the
image should look natural.
Weaknesses:
 Could be seen as bland without a decent amount of Post-processing.
 Target audiencemay be hard to specify.Large amount of Sub-genres or Rap/Hip-Hop. Rap/Hip-Hop
has a largeaudienceand therefore pushingthe design towards one specific group of the sub-genres
could be challengingas the magazinewould have to appeal to all sub-genres,meaningthat the
magazine must be highly accurateto the denotations of the genre.
