Rock and roll is a genre that originated and evolved in the United States during
the late 1940s and early 1950s, from African-American musical styles such as
gospel, jazz, and blues. In 1953, Bill Haley and His Comets are the first to hit the
pop charts with a true rock and roll song, taking their single "Crazy Man Crazy"
to #12. By 1957 rock and roll artists appear regularly on the popular music charts
and by 1959 rock and roll records account for 43% of all records sold.
By 1964 American artists are sharing the top of the charts with U.K. bands led by
the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. In the sixties, television becomes a major
force in rock music as networks try to attract a younger audience. The Beatles
dominate the sixties record charts with 6 of the top 10 albums of the decade and
21 of the decades' top 100 singles. Their nearest competitor is Elvis Presley with
9 of the decades' top 100 singles and 4 of the decades' top 100 albums.
The Beatles break up in 1970, but all four members continue to impact the
decade with successful solo careers. Big time bands, many of them formed in the
'60's, such as the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Who, Grand Funk and Led
Zeppelin travel in private jets and play to thousands in arenas and outdoor
stadiums. This diversity of music distribution channels, along with an expanding
market allows for a wide variety of new rock styles to emerge. Elvis Presley dies
in 1977 at age 42. Huge crowds begin flocking to his Memphis home, Graceland.
History:
John Lennon is shot to death by a fan in 1980 just as he was coming back into
the public eye with a new album. MTV (Music Television) is launched on 300
U.S. cable TV systems in 1981. By 1983 MTV is available on 2,000 cable
systems. The prevalence of music videos as a 24/7 marketing tool is influential
in bringing numerous new bands and music styles into the mainstream.
Records and concerts to benefit charity are supported by many rock music
artists. These include Band Aid, We Are The World, plus the Live Aid and Farm
Aid concerts.
These artists are resistant to the demands of big record companies and
unwilling to change styles to reach a mass market audience. Heavy metal
morphs into new sub-genres such as rap metal or rapcore, nu metal and
industrial metal. Electronic music continues to change as well, with techno and
house splitting into new styles. In the 90's Hip-Hop continues to expand in
influence and grow in diversity. With huge growth in sales, radio airplay and
overall success for artists. Improvements in computers and software allow for
digital music creation and recording on home computers. The internet and
sound compression allow for digital distribution of music, often bypassing the
need for a major label album release.
Examples of artists I would have on the cover and the type of tone it would give:
I am trying to go for a predominately female magazine even though men will be
promoted. It seems that rock artists were generally better expressed in black and
white as although colour was around, black and white is more powerful and
focuses on the artist. Furthermore, the colours presented through the rock genre
were dull and nothing implies rock and rock more commonly than a muted black
and white. This period is where women individuality arisen therefore, it would be
more symbolic to include a female rock artist as the cover story. Furthermore, the
women shown are not over sexualised and their body language and posture
suggests independence and success.
Locations: Usually, now that music videos became possible,
bands would just be filmed performing in concert, surrounded
by instruments and a large audience. Even when not filmed,
bands would still perform at huge festivals or concert halls. The
mise-en-scene is not difficult to notice as rock artists are nearly
always in front of an audience and are always linked with a
series of instruments whether they are in a band or not.
Types of clothes my artist would wear:
Accessories and make up that my artist would wear:
Lana Del Rey says, “I wish I was dead already,” when discussing her heroes Amy Winehouse and Kurt Cobain (The Guardian, June 2014)
Alt-rock’s favourite ice queen shocked almost everyone by publicly wishing she was ice cold – as in dead. She made the shocking revelation
in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian. Prior to the bombshell revelation, journalist Tim Jonze asked Lana if she thought
dying young was glamorous, and she responded, “I don’t know. Ummm, yeah."
When Jonze instinctively responded with "don’t say that” and “you don’t,” Del Rey insisted, “I do! I don’t want to have to keep doing this.
But I am.” Jonze further questioned, “Do what? Make music?” Del Rey responded, “Everything. That’s just how I feel. If I wasn’t that way,
then I wouldn’t say it. I would be scared if I knew [death] was coming, but…”
Following the statement, Del Rey became engaged in a Twitter conversation with Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean, who tweeted that “the
death of young musicians isn’t something to romanticize.” Del Rey went on to explain, “[The interviewer] was asking me a lot about your
dad. I said I liked him because he was talented, not because he died young. The other half of what I said wasn’t really related to the people
he mentioned. I don’t find that part of music glam either.”
Jonze later put up audio of his conversation with Del Rey on Soundcloud to prove he had not twisted the singer’s words.
