Task 7Introduction, graphs and conclusions
Introduction to Task 7
• For this task, I need to create a profile for my magazine. This
was to find out how to represent my target audience within
my magazine. I did this using primary research and carried out
a questionnaire for people of my target audience to complete.
Within this questionnaire I used two main types of questions:
qualitative and quantitative. Quantitative includes getting a
quantity of answers easily without explanation. These types of
questions would have option boxes as the answers which you
would either need to tick or circle. These are also considered
‘closed’ questions. Qualitative is asking for data as well as a
persons opinions through a series of open questions, these
questions end with ‘Why?’.
• Quantitative example: How many days do you go to college?
• Qualitative example: Do you enjoy college? Please state why.
Graphs and conclusions
• I realised when handing out
my questionnaire that I was
handing it to the wrong
gender. Although I got the
feedback which I needed, I
was not asking the correct
gender. My target audience
is female, whereas I asked
mainly males. For my focus
group in the next task I will
make sure to ask only
females.

Male (4)
Female (2)
• I asked the correct age group for my magazine. My target
audience is aimed for this age range (16-20). From knowing
the ages of the people I asked, I can take their answers on
board entirely as they are the exact age my target audience is.
For my focus group I will make sure to maintain this age
category as it will fit my magazine.

• I did not intentionally mean to ask only white-british people,
so in my focus group I will ask a variety of ethnicities to have a
more reliable set of results and to make it more even.

Ethnicity
• I like how many option boxes I gave because it allowed me to
get a more varied set of results to see what people TRULY
liked and not just ticking the genre closest to what they like.
However, the one thing I would improve with this questions is
actually having an option for pop-punk or at least punk
because some people may have ticket that if they liked rock or
alternative.
Favourite artists
• This was hard to put into a graph or a pie chart as not one person
said the same band, and all the genres were varied. A list of some of
the bands mentioned were:
1. Drake, Travis Scott, Justin Bieber
2. BMTH, Linkin Park
3. Paramore, Breaking Benjamin
4. Iron Maiden
5. Maroon 5, Michael Buble, McBusted
• As you can see, they were extremely varied and not one of them
were pop-punk. However, this gave me an idea as to who else to
include within my magazine as a feature.
• But on another level, I did not ask to correct people to participate
within my questionnaire as none of this relates to pop-punk any way
so I do not know who to include from the pop-punk world into my
magazine.
• This was a great question to ask within my questionnaire as it really
gave me an idea as to what to include within my magazine. It
showed me that more people would purchase my magazine if it
included a poster section within it, so I am definitely going to include
one. Also it showed me that my target audience would love to see
interviews within a magazine as well, so I am going to use a QandA
segment on my double page spread. I think the only improvement I
could have made to this question was to add more options as people
could like other features as well, I just didn’t give a space for them to
write or say it.
• I chose to have disposable income as a question as it would let
me see whether or not the readers I would get would have
enough money to even buy the magazine. Seeing that they
have a disposable income would let me bump up the price of
my magazine, but however not too much seen as one third of
the people I asked do NOT have a job or some sort of
disposable income.
• This links in closely with my disposable income question.
There was a direct correlation between the amount of people
who have a disposable income and the amount of people that
were willing to spend £3.01-£4 on a magazine. Looking at my
results I would set the price of my magazine around the £2.50-
£3 mark as it would incorporate everyone’s opinions into it.
The one thing I wish I had included within this question is an
option box for “I don’t mind/I don’t care” as this could let me
choose the price of it for myself and what amount could make
a clear profit for me.
• This question was good to have in my questionnaire as it let
me know how frequently a person would pick up and
purchase my magazine. If I had chosen to do a weekly
magazine, which I was originally planning to do, no-one would
have bought it every week which means a loss of money for
me. So having it fortnightly would gain the most profit and
target audience engagement with the magazine. I feel as if
nothing could be improved with this question as I gained the
information I needed, even though I only had a small set of
people participating within my questionnaire.
• I was going to include a huge section related to when gigs are
taking place around the Birmingham area but judging from
these results I can see that most people do not attend gigs
regularly. However, there are two people that do go to gigs
very often. This means that I will still keep the gig and concert
dates section, but not have it as big as I originally planned. I
feel there was nothing wrong with this question also.
• I had to include a pop-punk question within this questionnaire as my
magazine is going to be pop-punk related. From these results I can
see that no-one had anything negative to say about pop-punk so I
can see that it is a widely liked genre. By having it as a open question
with no option boxes, I felt like I did not manipulate the answers in
any way to suit me. This gave me a more reliable answer and I feel
like there is nothing I could do to improve this question. However, I
wish I had included more questions to do with pop-punk as I feel this
questionnaire was not related to pop-punk any way apart from this
last question.
