- 2. ~ The Newman Library Tours: a History ~ Before 2002 Virtual Tours Designed by former Web Master in multiple languages to a wide audience: National and international presence For all students, especially transfer students Digitally presented library as a welcoming place An updated version exists today at the library web site
- 3. ~ The Newman Library Tours: a History ~ Before 2002 Traditional Tours Librarians gave orientation sessions to student peer leaders for Freshmen Orientation in various ways: Offered peer-to-peer learning Informal and lacked a script Occasionally, librarians conducted tours to bring freshmen into the library Focused on visiting designated service points in the library (reference desk, circulation desk, periodical desks now laptop loan desk) Simultaneous Tours caused bottlenecking at designated points. Problem: Lack of uniformity meant communication about the library varied
- 4. ~The Newman Library Tours: a History ~ After 2002 Self-Directed Tours and Tutorials Library Working Group - known as Interactive Development Group (IDG) formed to created Newman Library Tour and Quiz Through Freshmen Orientation student take self-guided tour to pick-up handouts at designated service points. Each handout contained relevant information about the reference, circulation, and laptop loan desk Fourth handout available at library’s website via chat reference Freshman Seminar Library Assignment Quiz Students take Quiz administered in Blackboard, so automatically graded Students able to take Quiz multiple times to achieve a grade of 80% or better. Problem solved: Students followed an instructional sheet so uniformity achieved. For Students - ensured a place for recall. For Staff – assessment data.
- 6. ~ Sharing My Newman Library Contest ~ Next Generation Self-Guided Library Tours Target audience - Freshmen Information Communication Technology savvy. Most students are familiar with multimedia platforms. Many students not shy about using digital cameras or any digital media. Students are capable of multi-tasking: Texting and online all the time Accessing Social Media (YouTube, Facebook, Twitter) Using Mobile devices (Blackberrys, iPhones, Kindles, etc.) ‘ American Idol’ generation.
- 7. ~ Sharing My Newman Library Contest~ Transformation of Library Tours Enhancement for peer-to-peer learning – Student Voice Students have input in what is relevant in library tours. Brings Freshmen into the library. Offers opportunities for student creativity by discovering a useful library tip to share with fellow students. Develops students’ communication and information literacy skills. Builds teamwork.

- 10. ~ Sharing My Newman Library Contest ~ Contest Challenges Reaching 1500 Freshmen through Freshmen Orientation office, Peer Leaders, Broadcast E-mails, Promo, Flyers and other marketing tactics. Participation Optional. Offered a prize: Dell Mini Laptops. Extended the contest deadline a few times to increase video submissions (Fall and Spring semesters).
- 11. ~ Sharing My Newman Library Contest ~ Contest Outcomes Students achieve self-assessment by consulting “Criteria for Evaluation” . Asked a Question on motivation: “ Please state what aspect of the library video, "Visit to the Newman Library" prompted you to make your video? Be specific ” Responses: “ We saw the video and had a stroke of inspiration…” “ . . .wanted to elaborate more on the laptop loan program…” Students learned about digital copyright and obtaining permissions/consent (ACRL IL Standard Five).

Library Tour Concept: Creating the Video A Visit to the Newman Library Represents a “day in the life” of two Baruch students visiting the Newman Library Script adapted by student actors (Baruch upperclassmen) who offered additional input. - 13. Library Tour Concept: Video as a Starting Point Video intended as a brief overview hinting of the possibilities for interaction with the library, its services and resources. Video is an ideal beginning point which leads to Captivate tutorials. All tour components will be downloadable to portable devices.
- 14. Library Tour Concept: Tutorials offer Detailed Instruction Tutorials about 3 minutes in length. Meant to be succinct and “to the point”. Incorporates screencasts, audio, and other multimedia aspects. Tutorials loaded on Youtube. http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v =a-ZGuGSWJ78 .
- 15. Library Tour Concept: Future and Long Term Use Easy Integration with library website and other new features such as LibGuides. Appealing and useful to other library user groups such as graduate, transfer, SEEK, etc. Given tour is made up of components, revisions and additions are possible without disruption to the whole. Since tour components loaded on Youtube, any major changes to the library website will not curtail access . Youtube presence means users drawn to the library from the Web and vice-versa, seamlessly.
