TEACHER EDUCATION COURSE
PRE-PRIMARY EDUCATION
THE STAGES OF A
LESSON
The stages of an English
lesson in pre-primary
school are:
1. Greeting
2. Welcome song
3. Routine
4. Exploration
5. Practice
6. Farewell
GREETING (2-3 minutes)
This stage sets the tone for the class. It's about making each
child feel welcomed and comfortable. It helps in establishing
a connection between the teacher and the students and
signals the start of the learning session.
Examples of what can be done:
Simple greetings like "Hello" or "Good morning,"
accompanied by gestures or a roll call where each child
responds when their name is called.
WELCOME SONG (3-5 minutes)
The welcome song further warms up the class and
transitions students into a learning mindset. Songs are
particularly effective with young learners for their rhythmic
and repetitive nature, which aids memory and language
acquisition.
Examples of what can be done:
A catchy, easy-to-sing song that may include greetings in
English or introduce/revisit vocabulary.
ROUTINE (3-5 minutes)
This stage involves activities that are familiar to the students,
providing a sense of security and routine. It's important for
reinforcing consistency and for reviewing previously learned material.
This is also when the teacher writes the stages of the lesson on board,
so students know what will happen during the day.
Examples of what can be done:
Remembering the day of the week, weather, or reciting a familiar
rhyme or chant that incorporates basic English vocabulary.
EXPLORATION (10-12 minutes)
This is a more interactive and dynamic part of the lesson
where new concepts are introduced. Exploration fosters
curiosity and encourages active participation. This is the
moment of the lesson when the book is used.
Examples of what can be done:
Interactive storytelling, discovering new words through
pictures and objects, watching a video etc.
PRACTICE (10-15 minutes)
The practice stage allows children to apply what they've
learned. This stage reinforces new knowledge through
repetition and usage, which is crucial for language learning.
This stages may consist in one or more activities.
Examples of what can be done:
Simple word-matching games, practicing new phrases
through role-play, or engaging in arts and crafts related to
the new vocabulary.
FAREWELL (3-5 minutes)
This final stage helps in winding down the class and provides
closure. It's a time to reflect on what was learned and to say
goodbye, which helps in transitioning out of the class
environment smoothly.
Examples of what can be done:
A goodbye song, a quick recap of the day's lesson, or a simple
group activity that ends the class on a positive note. This is
also when the teacher can set homework.
