ReMoved
ReMoved the short film is about a 10-year-old girl who navigates
her way through the foster care system, after being removed from
her home and separated from her younger brother. She struggles
to get along with all her foster parents and shows how much she's
been through. Showing the struggle of controlling her behaviour.
Purpose of the short film.
• The purpose of this film gets a message across to the audience to bring light to the
harsher reality of subjects of Foster Care and Child Abuse/Neglect. The goal of this short
film is that these films would be key learning tool in inspiring and training good foster
parents, social workers and many other adults who interact with children in foster care.
The people whom created the film encourages everyone within social care to use this film
in training. For example they did not charge anyone to watch this film, it was distributed for
people to watch for free as their main purpose was to get a message across.
• Below is a screenshot from their website where it encourages people to download as a
training tool for free. Although the production of the film cost a lot of money they did not
use it at all for a profit making short film.
Conventions of the film.
• Normal conventions:
• Character: The main character in this film is a young girl whom is moved in to the foster care system.
This young girl has a brother whom only appears a maximum of three times and is a stock character.
numerous characters appear which is against the normal conventions of a short film but they were
only shown for a few seconds. Therefore not costing the production team much money. There is a
maximum of 6 stock characters which still isn't very much therefore agreeing with the convention of
short films not having many characters. The stock characters life do not go in to depth and the
audience know near to nothing about them.
• Setting: The setting of the short story was mainly based in communal places in which are free or
houses which can be easily accessible by anyone. These places are cheap cost and everyday
places.which agrees with the conventions of short films using simple or low cost settings.
• Star System: The star system within this short film is near to none, they used very unknown actors in
this short film and therefore did not get the advertisement of the film or the fan base from any stars
within the film.
Structural conventions
• Titles: There is one title which is the name of the film at the begginig, this is after a
short introduction and shows the main character alone. The normal convention for a
short film is to have the title at the beginning of the short film like it is for films as
well.
• Length: The duration of a short film is normally between 3-20 minutes, whereas this
short film lasts approximately 12 minutes in which is within the normal conventions
of a short film
• Plot: The conventional plot of a short film is a simple plot, it hasn't got many
characters and it only really has one situations instead of many. As the time period
is shorter in order to explain the plot. This short film has a simple plot in which is the
girl going in to social care, being separated from her brother and the struggle in
finding the right foster carer for her.
Narrative Structure
• The Narrative structure for the short film ReMoved is set over a long
period of time it starts at her house showing domestic violence
between her parents and her dealing with being beaten and taking
care of her little brother. When social services get involved she is
split up from her brother. it jumps cuts to different foster parents
houses in which are happening one after the after, through the
houses she’s has flash backs to certain moments with her original
parents and the pain she went through with them. There is a constant
voice over to narrate the short film, which just says how the little girl
feels. She ends up at a foster home she's starts to adjust to, she is
then happy at the end when her brother is reunited with her.
• Camera: The camera movements in this short film represent and show the
audience much of the pain the little girl goes through without having to say
words. To start the short film off, There is a close up of the girls face, there is no
face expression, just the wind moving her hair, her face is shown to look
distressed, pale and tired looking. This instantly shows the audience that the girl
is the main character. Moving on from the first scene the camera instantly show
the audience the meaning of this short film as their is a range of mid shots and
long shots, using the shot reverse shot to show the girl taking care of her little
brother and folding clothes which is stereotypically the mothers role and then
switching to a long shot of the father abusing the mother. Through the whole
short film there is mainly just close and mid shots of the main character. This is
because they wanted to show the affect the pain had on the little girl and the
expressions and actions it pushed her to do.
• Lighting: The whole of this short film is natural light as it is all set during the day,
because of it being a short film they probably didn't have the money to create different
lighting but it still made a natural effect on the short film.
• Sound: To start the short film it is non diegetic sounds of waves crashing to open, it
then breaks through to a diegetic voice over which creates a sound bridge over the
whole of the 12 minutes which short breaks. There is music in which represents
sadness , slow, low beat and quiet music through some bits to create an atmosphere
of pain. through the final seconds of the short film diegetic music starts below a voice
over in which gives an atmosphere of happiness as she is reunited with her brother.
• Editing: The editing is very simple, it is mostly just cuts to each shot. However they do
use quite a few jump cuts to jump from different periods in time. To each foster
house. They use these simple techniques. they do use a few shot reverse shots to
show the facial expression of the main character and her going through a tough time.
