TECHNICAL WRITING:
Technical Writing is a field that focuses on providing information to users who need assistance to
accomplish a defined goal or task. The focus of technical writing is to assist users who need specific
information on using products, completing tasks, operating equipment, and completing other types of
activities.
Technical writers work with other professionals to maintain the quality of product/service
documentation. Technical writers work collaboratively with sales personnel, engineers, programmers,
graphic designers, quality control personnel, and client support personnel to ensure that
product/service documentation meets the needs of users.
Technical writers may be called on to produce different types of technical documents. These technical
documents have many similar features and requirements, but some documents, such as websites, have
more specific requirements.
Technical writers produce documents that include:
 User manuals
 Quick reference guides
 Proposals
 Annual or quarterly reports
 Newsletters
 Feasibility and planning studies
 White papers
 Marketing documents
 Websites
 Training materials
 Simulations
 Online help
 User assistance (FAQs)

grammar; sentence structure and style; achieving clear;
concise writing; elements of design and their impact on
usability and production; gender free writing; avoiding
insensitive and offensive language; avoiding plagiarism.
3 Editing Editing; using a style guide; proof reading; quality
assurance for technical writers; IEEE/ISO standards in
technical writing; versioning and document control.
4 Graphics for technical writers Graphic design and visual communication principles, how
to design and incorporate various graphics into a technical
document, scanning and SnagIt.
5 Tools Used Online Help (RoboHelp), Adobe FrameMaker and Acrobat
6 Advanced concepts in technical

Creating a proposal, writing for the Web; basics of
instructional designing; documenting databases;
documenting APIs; writing whitepapers; newsletters; news
