This document provides five techniques for effectively introducing a document: 1) Using a quotation, surprising fact, or statistic; 2) Asking a question or describing a problem; 3) Telling a story or giving a personal reason for interest; 4) Defining a central word or phrase; 5) Giving historical background or comparison. Examples are given for each technique pertaining to potential topics such as climate change, space travel, smoking, immigration, genetically modified food, the death penalty, and universal healthcare.
