This document discusses and analyzes several technologies related to improving efficiency and reducing emissions from coal-fired power plants and oil sands production. It first summarizes an analysis of factors affecting efficiencies of coal plants that identified non-linear relationships and different clusters of plant designs. It then discusses an alternative "co-processing" technology for upgrading bitumen from oil sands that focuses on removing heavy components and uses coal properties to do so more effectively. Finally, it proposes establishing a network to promote use of automated fault detection systems to improve process performance in industries like pulp/paper and petroleum.
