Technology and Teaching Standards
Why Do We Have the North Carolina Professional Teaching
Standards?
 The North Carolina State Board of Education and the North Carolina
Professional Teaching Standards Commissions made standards that were the
basis for teacher preparation, teacher evaluation, and professional
development.
 The mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education is that every
public school student will graduate from high school globally competitive for
work and college and prepared for life in the 21st century.
 Teachers will use the standards in order to help their students learn 21st
century content and master skills they will need when they graduate from
high school and enroll in higher education, the workforce, or the military.
Technology and Teaching Standards
STANDARD ONE:Teachers Demonstrate Leadership
Teachers demonstrate leadership in the school.
Teachers lead in their classroom.
Teachers lead the teaching profession.
Teachers advocate for schools and students.
Teachers demonstrate high ethical standards.
STANDARDTWO:Teachers Establish a Respectful
Environment for a Diverse Population of Students
 Teachers provide an environment in which each
child has a positive, nurturing relationship with
caring adults.
 Teachers treat students as individuals
 Teachers adapt their teaching for the benefit of
students with special needs.
 Teachers work collaboratively with families and
significant adults in the lives of their students.
 Teachers embrace diversity in the school community
and in the world
STANDARDTHREE:Teachers Know the ContentTheyTeach
 Teachers align their instruction with the
North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
 Teachers know the content appropriate to
their teaching specialty.
 Teachers recognize the interconnectedness of
content areas/disciplines.
 Teachers make instruction relevant to
students.
STANDARD FOUR:Teachers Facilitate Learning for
Their Students
 Teachers know the ways in which learning takes place, and they know the
appropriate levels of intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development
of their students.
 Teachers plan instruction appropriate for their students.
 Teachers use a variety of instructional methods.
 Teachers integrate and utilize technology in their instruction.
 Teachers help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
 Teachers help students work in teams and develop leadership qualities.
 Teachers communicate effectively.
 Teachers use a variety of methods to assess what each student has learned
STANDARD FIVE:Teachers Reflect onTheir Practice
 Teachers analyze student learning.
 Teachers link professional growth
to their professional goals.
 Teachers function effectively in a
complex, dynamic environment.
STANDARD SIX:Teachers Contribute to the Academic
Success of Students
 The work of the teacher results in acceptable,
measurable progress for students based on established
performance expectations using appropriate data to
demonstrate growth.
Why do we have National EducationalTechnology Standards for
Teachers?
 The International Society forTechnology in Education issued its
National EducationalTechnology Standards forTeachers to define
the new skills and pedagogical insights educators need to teach,
work and learn in the digital age.
 The ISTE Standards work together to support educators, students
and leaders with clear guidelines for the skills and knowledge
necessary to move away from the factory model.
 Effective teachers model and apply the ISTE standards as they
design, implement, and assess learning experiences to engage
students and improve learning
Technology and Teaching Standards
STANDARD ONE: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and
Creativity.
 Promote, support, and model creative and innovative
thinking and inventiveness.
 Engage students in exploring real-world issues and
solving authentic problems using digital tools and
resources.
 Promote student reflecting using collaborative tools to
reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding
and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
 Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging
in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-
to-face and virtual environments.
STANDARDTWO: Design and Develop Digital Age Learning
Experiences and Assessments
Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources
to promote student learning and creativity.
Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue
their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational
goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
Customize and personalize learning activities to address students‘ diverse learning styles,
working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned
with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and
teaching.
STANDARDTHREE: Model Digital Age Work and Learning
 Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer
of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.
 Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community
members using digital tools and resources to support student
success and innovation.
 Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to
students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media
and formats.
 Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging
digital tools to locate, analyze, and evaluate, and use
information resources to support research and learning.
STANDARD FOUR: Promote and Model Digital Citzenship
and Repsonsibility
 Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital
information and technology, including respect for copyright,
intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of
sources.
 Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-
centered startegies providing equitable access to appropriate
digital tools and resources.
 Promote model digital etiquette and responsible social
interactions related to the use of technology and information.
 Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness
by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using
digital age communication and collaboration tools.
STANDARD FIVE: Engage in Professional Growth and
Leadership
 Participate in local and global learning communities to explore
creative applications of technology to improve student learning.
 Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology
infusion, participating in shared decision making and
community building, and developing the leadership and
technology skills of others.
 Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional
practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and
emerging digital tools and resources in support of student
learning.
 Contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the
teaching profession and of their school and community.
