 Basic Information
 Title: Let’s build our science vocabulary!
 Area of Study: Foreign and 2nd
    Language/Science
 Grade: 2nd Grade
 Duration: 45 minutes
 Objectives:
This lesson plan has been created to work with
English Language Learners (ELL’s) students in the
content area of science. The main purpose of the
lesson will be helping these students to acquired
and/or improve their science vocabulary. Although the
target of this lesson plan is ELL’s, it can also be use
with English speaking students, since the main idea
of it is develop the most important key words in the
scientific method.
 Florida Standards:

SS.3.A.1.2: Utilize technology resources to gather
information from primary and secondary sources.
LA.2.5.2 Listening and Speaking: The student effectively
applies listening and speaking strategies.
LA.2.5.2.2 Listening and Speaking: The student will begin
to use language appropriate for different occasions,
audiences, and topics.
SC.2.N.1.6 The Practice of Science: Explain how
scientists alone or in groups are always investigating new
ways to solve problems.
 NETS-S:

NETS-S 6: Technology Operations and Concepts, since
we will be using a Power Point presentation to create the
lesson plan.
NETS-S 2: Communication and Collaboration, after
students learn the basic and more important key words of
the scientific method, they will work in groups to plan their
own science project.
NETS-S 3: Research and Information Fluency, students
will use the internet to access a given webpage to choose
which science project topic they want to work with.
NETS-S 4: Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and
Decision Making, Students will need to work cooperatively
to decide which kind of science project they will be doing.
 Introduction:
                 The Scientific Method
Scientist use these steps to when they are developing
a research:
 1. As a question and state a purpose
 2. Research
 3. Hypothesis
 4. Procedures (variables, materials, directions)
 5. Collect data
 6. Create a graph
 7. Draw a conclusion
 Procedure:
We will be learning two important things that will help us in many positive ways. Many
students are having a hard time in the science class, because is difficult for you to
understand all those “big words” that the science teacher uses. This is a very
interesting activity to help you learn the science vocabulary, and since the science fair
is around the corner, I will be teaching you, first, the most relevant key word of the
scientific method. Second, and to help us with this task, I will be showing you how to
use an ELL strategy called KIM (Key word, Information, and Memory cue). This is
another way to help you remember the new vocabulary that you will be learning today.
To make it more interesting, we will be using for most of our instructional time, a super
cool PowerPoint presentation! I will start by showing you what is the scientific method,
and together we will identify those “big science words” that we are not recognizing.
Then we will be using the KIM strategy to memorize those words. After we all have get
use to the definition of those words, we will keep working with our PowerPoint. At the
end I will be assigning groups, to then choose and work in our science fair projects.
Every group will have to do some research before choosing their topic. I will provide
you with some web pages to get this information. When everybody finishes choosing
their topics, then we may start planning our science project. After this we will be
having another class with a different lesson plan in which I will be explaining to you
how to develop a science fair project.
 Materials and/or Resources:
1. Laptop Computer
2. PowerPoint Software
3. Wall Projector (white)
4. Science journals and pencils, to write the new
vocabulary that they will learn.
5. KIM diagram (ELL strategy)
        K I M
    Key Word Information Memory Cue
 Accommodations:
This lesson is been specially design to work with
ELL’s students, and they will have reasonable
extended time to master the new science vocabulary.
At the end of the PowerPoint presentation they will be
working in groups, with the Internet, to do their
research. For this part of the activity I will choose the
most technology proficient students to help each
others. If we have a Special Education student he/she
will receive the appropriate accommodations based
on their specific learning needs, and according with
their disability.
 Ongoing and Individual Assessment:
During the activity I will be assessing the students’
behavior, as well as their cooperative work skills.
After the presentation, and before they start their
research to choose their topic, students will have a
pop quiz to assess their knowledge on the new
vocabulary. They should be able to identify the right
definition for each word, and demonstrate that they
really understand how they can use those words.
 Throughout the integration of the Power Point
technology the teacher will keep students focused and
engage, and they will be more enthusiastic to learn and
motivated. Having the visual aid of the presentation will
help them picture in their mind what they are learning,
which can contribute to help them having a better
retention. Also, students have the opportunity to learn
in a more comprehensive learning environment. The
development of this kind of lesson is longer and time
consuming than a regular lesson plan without
technology integration; however it is worth the extra
time, as well as the financial expenses used to
planning, if the students’ academic gains are going to
    be above average.
 Reflection:
1.What went well?
Students had a great time working together in this activity. They showed
excellent classroom behavior and interest in what they were learning.
They were also able to memorize the new vocabulary and their
assessment revealed good academic gains.
2. What can be improved?
To improve this lesson plan I will need to gather more Internet resources
for the students, to help them with their topic’s research.
3. How did the students feel about the lesson? Were they engaged,
frustrated, off-task?
Students were very excited, engaged, and motivated throughout the
entire lesson. When they worked on line to choose their topic, they were
very cooperative one to each other, demonstrating excellent cooperative
work skill. At the end of the lesson everybody was very proud and
satisfied of their outcomes, including me.
