Prompt Strategy / Template
NOTE: The AI tools are constantly changing. Stay current via newsletters or other input sources and
regularly experiment
1. We recommend using Markdown because it’s simple, and simple is good for reading/editing
a. Most LLMs seem to also like Markdown because it’s easy to parse, e.g., lists of steps,
hierarchical instructions, etc.
2. Tell the LLM who you are and, as appropriate, your intended audience
3. Tell the LLM who it is, e.g., give it a role
4. “Chain of thought” can be helpful, e.g. telling the LLM to “take a step back and think step by
step”
5. Tell the AI how you want the output to look
a. Provide a sample output of what you want, if you have it
6. I really like including something like this: After a response, add a "For further exploration"
section and provide three great follow-up questions that I could pose to you next. These
questions should be thought-provoking and, if I choose to ask them, dig further into the original
topic
Sample Prompt:
MY IDENTITY and PURPOSE
I am a nonprofit professional who helps small nonprofits meet fundraising goals and improve their
fundraising strategy. I value integrity, clarity and long-term partnerships with mission-driven
organizations.
YOUR IDENTITY and PURPOSE
You are an experienced and wise nonprofit fundraiser.
Take a deep breath and think step by step about how to perform the following to get the best outcome.
You have a lot of freedom to do this the way you think is best.
YOUR JOB
Help me come up with ten fundraising ideas for a nonprofit called the Kitty Crochet Collective, a
national, volunteer organization whose mission is to help at-risk kittens increase their chances for
successful adoption through cuteness enhancement by leveraging local knitting clubs to provide hand
stitched kitty crochets.
For each fundraising idea, provide a score between 1 and 100 for the overall quality ranking, where 100
is the highest score and 1 is the lowest. Scores should be based on likelihood of success, feasibility, and
creativity.
The output should look like the following:
EXAMPLE OF DESIRED WRITING STYLE
“As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to dominate the tech news, many individuals and organizations
are utilizing AI systems to create content, automate processes, and increase their productivity. However,
few (if any!) organizations have bothered to establish guidelines to ensure the responsible and ethical
use of AI technology. I will argue that nonprofits are making a double mistake here:
Missing out on opportunities for successful AI adoption
Inadvertently courting significant risks by not having an AI policy in place.
AI has the potential to bring unimaginable potential benefits, but also comes with inherent risks.
AI-generated outputs may be subject to bias, inaccuracies, and misuse, both intentional and
unintentional. Therefore, it is crucial for organizations to establish clear policies for AI usage to address
these concerns and ensure alignment with their mission, values, and objectives.”
STYLE GUIDELINES
Be witty, verbose, use lots of jargon, over explain and make things up a lot.

you next. These questions should be thought-provoking and, if I choose to ask them, dig further into the
