Telecommunications
& Networks
By Emma MacMillan
What is Telecommunication?
Telecommunication refers to sending and receiving of data via electricity through
devices such as...
Functions
- Transmits information between
sender and receiver
- Route messages on most efficient
path to control information flow
- Perform data editorial tasks &
processing of information
- Convert message speed or format Components
- Computers
- Terminals (input/output devices) to
send and receive data
- Communication processors
- Communication software
Network Topologies
Ring Network - All computers are
linked with a closed loop
Star Network - One computer
acts as a central host to all
computers and other devices
Bus Network - Some computers
linked by a single circuit
Communication Networks
LAN Local Area Network: require own personal channel, access to a limited
distance, requires cable connections
- Commonly used in a home or office
WLAN Wireless LAN: requires wifi and/or bluetooth, creates a small, personal
network
- Commonly used in a home or office
WAN Wide Area Network: requires cable, satellite, and microwave technologies,
covers large distances
- Can be used to connect cities, states, countries, etc.
E-Commerce & E-Business Technologies
E-mail, Groupware, Voicemail, and other electronic communications such as video
conference have expanded the business sector to the virtual world. Such
technologies allow us to buy and sell quite easily through the Internet.
Networking
Enterprise: Smaller networks link to create a company wide network
Internet: Links independent networks together
Internet2: Supports higher bandwidth than
Internet, works at higher speed
Interconnection Communication
Telnet
-Allows connectivity to
multiple computers at a time
Open System
Interconnection
-Determines layout to
interconnect various
devices or equipment
TCP/IP Model
-Based on OSI
-Used for
communication and
transmission
Internet Service
Provider
-Temporary connections
for subscribers to
communicate via Internet
WWW World Wide Web
WWW, or the World Wide Web is more or less the biggest global information
system. It is based on HTML and can combine sound, graphics, and hypermedia.
Features
Push Technology: Users are shown data
based on their preferences or frequent
searches, sites, etc.
Firewall: Applies filter between internal
and external networks.
Extranets: Private intranets open to
authorized external users.
Managing New Information Technologies
Challenges
- Losing control of management
- Required organizational changes
- Connectivity and application integration
- Hidden costs
- Reliability, scalability, security
Content Managing System (CMS)
- Allows many users to share data
- Efficient communication for users
- Reduces repetition
- Manages servers, objects, and audits
- Maintains reports and goals
