- 2. Teleconferencing is broadly defined as: A small group communication through an electronic medium. It enables a variety of technologies to be used to conduct interactive meetings without having the participants interact in the same location
- 3. History of Teleconferencing The first attempt was the AT&T Picturephone developed in the 1960’s. This design was not successful because of several reasons: Travel expenses for meetings were cheap & The understanding of the concept was not grasped by the people in the business world at the time
- 4. History cont… Over time teleconferences continued to grow and expand in different forms. These meetings can be conducted in the simplest form, such as a three-way telephone call or as in depth as a video conferencing call.
- 5. Pros and Con’s One of the major reasons against teleconferencing is the level of interaction is not the same as a face to face meeting. Another reason for the hesitation of teleconferencing is the unfamiliarity with the technology used in a teleconference. Another negative about teleconferences is the likelihood of technology failure.
- 6. Pros and Con’s cont… On the other side teleconferencing saves businesses up to 30% in meeting costs. Teleconferences also save companies lots of time. Instead of spending days to travel for meetings you can conduct the meeting in one day. Along with these advantages the ease of setting up and conducting meetings far outweighs any disadvantage. A simple Internet or phone connection allows access almost instantly to conducting group meetings.
- 7. Growth in the field of teleconferencing will continue to expand as the years pass and as technology advances further. Right now this technological form is just beginning to take hold of the business world. With the advantages being known to outweigh the disadvantages look for nothing but success and globalization for teleconferencing.
