A pyrometer is an instrument used to measure the temperature of an object by detecting the amount of heat radiation it emits. An optical pyrometer uses a lens to focus thermal radiation from the object onto a reference lamp. An observer adjusts the current to the lamp until its brightness matches that of the object, allowing the object's temperature to be determined. A radiation pyrometer also uses an optical system to focus heat energy onto a detector, which converts it to an electrical signal showing the temperature on a display. Both types of pyrometers measure temperature remotely without direct contact.
