In 1118, nine knights from France and England founded the legendary Templar order in Jerusalem. Their mission was to protect pilgrims in the Holy Land. Over nine years in Jerusalem, their order grew in membership and became very wealthy and powerful. Legends say the Templars were guardians of the Holy Grail, though it was never found. In the 14th century, King Philip IV of France and Pope Clement V conspired to eliminate the Templars for their wealth and influence, arresting their last leader, Jacques de Molay, who was burned at the stake in front of Notre Dame Cathedral.
