Title: Terminating a UTP Patch Cable with RJ11 Connectors on Both Ends for an Analog
Telephone Set
Objectives:
 To be able to properly terminate a UTP Patch Cable for an analog electronics telephone
set.
 To be able to verify the continuity of the UTP Patch Cable.
Project Checklist
Experience Level: Basic
Time Required: 5-10 minutes
Steps: 13
Supplies:
 RJ11 connectors (2 per cable)
 RJ11 Modular Crimping/CableCutting Tool
 UTP Cable Stripping Tool
 UTP Cable ( 4 Wire UTP for Telephone )
 UTP Cable Tester
 Telephone Jack
 Conventional Telephone Set
Introduction:
The RJ-11 is the most extensively used registered jack in telecommunications, and it is commonly
used as the standard connector on 2 pair or 4 wire telephone wiring. The term "Registered Jack"
refers to a physical connector interface that is most commonly used for telephone wire terminals.
Despite the fact that the RJ-11 connector has six connector positions, only two or four are usually
used.
While RJ11 is a widely used jack in telecommunications, the red green wiring in 6P2C and the
black red green yellow configuration in 6P4C are the connector's standard pin coding.

Activity Procedure
STEP 1
By using a crimping tool for RJ11 connector, trim the end of the 4 wire UTP cable you are
terminating ensuring that the ends of the conducting wires are even.
STEP 2
Strip off about 1/2 inch of the cable's jacket with a UTP cable stripper, being careful not to harm
the inner conducting wires.
STEP 3
Separate the two twisted wire pairs and then unwind each pair separately to create four
independent wires. Flatten the wires as much as possible, as they'll need to be quite straight to
go into the connector properly.
STEP 4
With the wire ends facing away from you, hold the cable. Arrange the wires in a flat, side-by-side
ribbon pattern, moving from left to right, in the order illustrated below.
STEP 5
Carefully put the flattened, organized wires into the connector, pushing through until the wire
ends emerge from the pins, while holding the RJ11 connector with the pins facing away from you
andthe plug-clipsidefacingdown.Push as much of the cablejacketaspossibleintotheconnector
for added strength.
STEP 6
Check that the wire ends coming out of the pin side of the connector are in the correct sequence;
if they aren't, remove them from the connector, rearrange them, and re-insert them. Keep in mind
that after the connector is crimpedontothe cable,it is permanentlyattached. If you discoverafter
termination that a wire order error was made, you'll have to cut the connector off and start over!
STEP 7
In your crimping tool, insert the prepared connector/cable assembly into the RJ11 slot. Squeeze
the handles of the crimper together firmly until you can't go any farther. To guarantee a proper
crimp, release the handles and repeat the process.
STEP 8
If your crimperdoesn'tautomaticallytrimthewireends aftertermination, gentlycut them tomake
them as flush as possible with the connector's surface. The better your final plug-in connection,
the closer the wire ends are trimmed.
STEP 9
Repeat the operation on the opposite end of your cable when the initial termination is complete.
STEP 10
Test the continuity using a UTP cable tester.
STEP 11
Connect one end of the UTP patch cable to the analog electronic telephone set and the other to
the telephone jack.
STEP 12
Test the functionality of the analog electronic telephone set.
- Dial Tone
- DTMF signaling by pressing a local telephone number.
- Ringing
Step 13
Write your activity observation:
