- 2. The Aussie Interpreter 2 The Game The Game This game is a fun and light-hearted way to introduce the difficulties and obstacles in working with translators and interpreters. It can also be used to highlight the importance of language, cultural norms and colloquialisms in our society. Instructions: 1. Cut out the Aussie Phrases below 2. Place the phrases face-down on a desk up the front of the classroom 3. Invite the students, one-by-one to come up and pick a phrase. 4. The student should then read the phrase to the class as it is written (ideally in their best ‘Australian accent’) and then translate it into proper English explain. N.B. This game is designed for adult or mature learners as some of the language may be inappropriate or offend some people.

Nah, he got the sack so he’ll spit the dummy if you call him a dole-bludger. Watch him but; he’s built like a brick shithouse and always ready to punch-on. Bloody oath! I got crook after I ate the sangers for brekky at Macca’s yesterdee mornin’. I was on the dunny all night! You bloody greenies worry too much; she’ll be right mate. Joyce, I chucked a sickie; come over for a cuppa this arvo and we’ll watch some tele!
