Regions are geographic areas that are divided for the purposes of comparison and detailed study. There are three main types of regions - formal regions defined by governments like countries, the Rocky Mountains, and the Malay Archipelago. Functional regions serve a particular purpose such as school boundaries or congressional districts. Vernacular regions are loosely defined areas understood by people such as the South, the Middle East, and the South Pacific.
