Editor's Notes

  • #2: Lotus Protector?
  • #3: These are “Collaboration Challenges” and Customer Pain "Increase Knowledge Sharing", "Find and Use Expertise", "Leverage a new Generation of Workers", "Increase Levels of Collaboration", "Make Teams More Effective", "Cope With Information Overload"
  • #4: When someone asks what you do for work, you're unlikely to respond, " I send and receive emails for a living." Unfortunately, it sometimes feels like that. Your Inbox represents a valuable flow of information. While you're in it, you are more valuable. The problem is that sending and receiving emails doesn't amount to a unit of work, in most cases. We have to leave the valuable information flow in order to "get work done". When we do this, we are "out of the loop" for a period of time. Further, we run the risk of becoming distracted, prolonging our absence from the information flow. Notes keeps you "in the flow" by bringing the information to you. We do this by including IM/presence awareness, Lotus Quickr personal content library integration, the Lotus Symphony Editors, sidebar plug-ins, RSS feeds, composite applications and widgets invoked from Live Text.
  • #9: Our team of usability engineers spent two years, and over 2000 usability tests, to build the best, most-functional messaging interface on the market today. Users of Outlook, Google mail, and prior versions of Notes will find themselves instantly comfortable in the substantially-improved Notes 8 user experience. ----- Modern, intuitive, Web-like user interface with a rich set of capabilities and features. Coversation threads – group emails by thread or conversation, rather than individually. Hopes with inbox overload and management. Integrated IM in your inbox, as well as in each individual email. Allows you to follow up in context, when the necessity arises.
  • #10: ..and that team of usability engineers just keeps on going and going, and growing! We've added 50% more resource to that team since shipping Notes 8, to ensure that future versions of Notes continue to innovate and deliver best-in-class capabilities! ----- Intuitive user interface with a rich set of capabilities and features. Unanswered calendar entries – ghosted calendaring shows meeting invites, that you haven’t yet answered in gray, so that you can manage your calendar from your calendar, vs your inbox. Provides you with a total view. Integrated IM in calendar invitations.
  • #12: Intuitive user interface with a rich set of capabilities and features. New business card view for easy scanning. Can customize with photos, images, etc. Integrated IM in contact list
  • #15: You can now navigate the Notes Preference fields using the TAB key. You can also automatically or by default compress the image that are pasted in the document. If you are pasted the bitmap, the new feature will compress the image inside the document so that the document size will reduce when you have images inside it. We will start out generally with context menu. The context menu are streamline not just for Mail but also for contacts Any time you right click on something i.e name, we change the context menus for you. There are few things that you want to take away from this. One is number of options that are available to you by just right click menu. We have tried to present a smaller list on context menu that you can drill down to get to all things you want to do. The other thing which makes it easier is, that you can see on left are the icons. These icons are the visual indicators of things you want to do. eg: quick flag has a flag next to it. By right clicking on a meeting invitation, you will have a accept or decline right there. These quick indicators in the context menus adds upto productivity of users in everyday use as they can make quick decisions by seeing the icons.
  • #17: Lotus Notes 8 adds a sidebar to incorporate the notion of 'peripheral vision'. All knowledge workers today multitask, and Notes 8 helps you do so more effectively than having to constantly flip windows. In your sidebar, you can get one or two-click access to most frequently used features, all without losing the focus of your primary function. Side “Shelf” – take things out and put them away as you need them. Out of the box plug in apps: Calendar “Day at a Glance” Feeds Instant messaging and presence awareness Activities (requires addtl purchase) Personal content library Can add customized plug-in’s as needed – your own, from BPs, etc.
  • #19: Live Text recognizes different types of content and helps you automate common actions you might take against that content -- presenting relevant, real-time information that makes it easier to do your job -- with fewer distractions. My Widgets and Live Text in Lotus Notes expand the scope of information available to users. Get work done faster – reduce copy/paste Perform business actions with a single click Automate common look-ups Present relevant, real-time information – without storing it in a document – not subject to the date it was created Customize by role or individual

  • #25: Use modern Web 2.0 techniques such as AJAX and widgets Customization is very easy with stylesheets.
  • #27: With composite applications in Lotus Notes, you can make use of your current applications and systems, all in a single, easy to use business mashup that will make end users more productive. Composite applications are made up of reusable application components Components can be built once and shared This plug-n-play architecture saves time and reduces redundancy Assembling flexible, customized interfaces can provide new business insights
  • #28: Example composite application. Connect in Context Composite Application The Connect in Context composite application allows you to closely link your Lotus Notes mail with a Lotus Connections server. The Connect in Context is similar to the normal Lotus Notes 8 mail template except with the addition of some extra components, these components allow the user to view information form various Connection services without having to leave their mail view. The components are: Lotus Notes Mail Parser Component Connections Activities Component Connections Blogs Component Connections Dogear Component Connections Profile Component Connections Communities Component Tag Cloud Component While using the Connect in Context composite application a user simply has to drag a mail document to the Mail Parser Component, where the email address and keywords from the subject will be extracted, this information is then passed to the other components using the Property Broker. Each component then queries the relevant Lotus Connections Server for public items that match the email address and keywords found in the mail. The results are collated and displayed in the components; they are ordered according to the number of keywords/email address that are in common with the mail. About each of the components Lotus Notes Mail Parser Component This component is used to extract email addresses and keywords from the subject of a mail. This component is wired to the other components that display the content. It can be fired by receiving a wire from the Mail View or by dragging and dropping a mail to the drop zone. It publishes the emails and keywords in JSON and XML formats. Activities, Communities, Dogear and Blog Components There are two main sections, 'People' and 'Keywords'. As stated above, the input of these components is email addresses and keywords. If the people associated with the email addresses are part of an Activity; that Activity will be shown in the 'People' tab of the display. If an Activity is tagged with a keyword, this Activity will be shown in the 'Keyword' tab. There is also a weight (number), representing how many people in the input are also a member of this Activity. Or, in the case of the Keywords tab, how many of the keywords entered in the input are also tags to the same Activity. Hovering over this number brings up information regarding the people or tags Clicking on the plus sign in the right hand corner of the component also brings up more details about the Activities, which the user can hover over and gain more information about the Activity. The components for Dogear, Blogs and Communities all display their information in the same way. Profiles Component The Profiles component receives the same input as the Activities, Blogs, Communities and Dogear components, a wire carrying emails and keywords in a JSON or XML format. This component is not interested in the keywords. It looks up the relevant profile for each email address and displays a simple business card like item in the view. Tag Cloud Component The tag cloud component collates all the tags from any Activities, Blogs, Communities or Dogear that are visible in the Composite Application. The tags are then weighted by their frequency. Each time an Activities, Blogs, Communities or Dogear component updates the tag cloud is refreshed. The component has the same two actions as the other components and wires fired into either action will tell the tag cloud to clear the current tags and prepare for a new set of tags. The other components are aware of the tag cloud if it is included and pass new tags directly to it. It does not receive any tags through the Property Broker. How are they provisioned? The components can be provisioned from an eclipse update-site, NSF update-site or a WebSphere Portal Server. Connect in Context composite application is distributed with two files. CIC_Sample.nsf and CIC_UpdateSite.nsf. CIC_UpdateSite.nsf contains the components while CIC_Sample.nsf contains the composite Application.
  • #30: A summary of our current and planned product roadmap. As you can see we are laying out our plans not only for a great Notes and Domino 8.5, but also Notes/Domino Next beyond that. The future roadmap is clear and coherent and delivers real value to your business The exact nature of what ends up in those future products depends on our customers -- ideas, feedback, comment etc.
  • #31: The goal of Lotus Notes and Domino is to provide organizations with a flexible and COMPREHENSIVE collaboration solution. We have customers deploying hundreds of thousands of Lotus Notes seats. We value investment protection with simple upgrades and backwards compatibility. Collaboration in context: Context is a key differentiator for collaboration tools. Contextual collaboration allows you to access the tools and resources you need within the context of the task at hand – so you’re presented with the choices and information you need, when you need them. No more flipping between applications. Closing one application before opening another. Less copy & paste. Your workflow become seamless, uninterrupted. It just makes sense. And, it increases your effectiveness. The foundation of an effective collaboration solution, of course, includes e-mail, calendar and contact management. That is a given. The Lotus solution is intuitive, easy to use and feature rich. Version 8 included a major refresh to Lotus Notes UI, while keeping the familiar Lotus Notes format, to provide a modern, Web-like look & feel. Context sensitive toolbars, conversation threads and collaboration history help increase employee efficiency. Advanced collaborative capabilities include capabilities beyond email, and often included with Lotus Notes and Domino at no additional charge. They are plugged-in or integrated in context to provide you with additional tools to increase productivity and effectiveness. Such items include integrated instant messaging and presence awareness, a personal content library, productivity tools for document/spreadsheet and presentation creation, RSS feeds, and widgets to name a few. These tools help you think, and reach, outside of your inbox! Built on an open-standards based platform, Lotus Notes and Domino provides a fully extensible, rapid application development environment. Our customers have thousands of mission critical collab and business apps built on the Lotus Notes and Domino platform. Customers can also create and deploy composite applications, also called business mashups, that integrate content from multiple backend systems into a single, intuitive user interface. Universal access allows your employees to remain as productive as possible regardless of location. Rich client (Notes), browser (DWA), and mobile device (Traveler and BP solutions) client access support provides the flexibility employees need to connect wherever they are. Plus, replication support for offline access allows employees to remain productive even when disconnected.
  • #34: Give more examples of what the Workspace pull-rights might look like? Tell about how we wanted to use color in the folders. We assume that for most users , the old folders will not really be useful 9e.g. the ones under “Browse for an application…), but we could not safely remove them – it Might destroy data for those folks who use the workspace independently of the bookmark bar. SYNCHRONIZATION – tied to the Advanced menus, will not show up for most people.
  • #41: Domino Next will include the ability to recall sent mail. This has been a long requested feature and one I certainly would have like to have a few times myself. A user only has to find a message in their Sent view and to choose the “Mail Recall” action. This sends out chaser mail (or what I like to call anti-mail) which will delete instances of the original mail. Policies and server settings will make it possible to tightly control the use and behavior of mail recall. For example, allowing a decision about whether to delete read mail or not. One of the most interesting features that is available to Notes 8 user is Message recall shown here We've all probably done it - sent an email we wish we could take back. Users running their mail on Domino 8 mail servers will be able to retrieve Notes mail they accidentally or inappropriately sent to the wrong people. Its activated from the sent mail folder or all documents view in Notes, it allows users to retrieve messages from one or all of the recipients. The feature will remove the message from the recipient's mailbox and notify the person recalling the message if it has been read (opened). Its a very robust and manageable implementation. We'll also be giving administrators policy based control over which users can recall messages and which recipients allow recall requests from their email. We may call it message recall - you may call it the career saver! (Note that this feature works for Notes delivered mail not internet or SMTP delivered email)
