Our Experience
Remember When….
Websites were composed of thousands of flat HTML pages?
Changes required software and FTP uploads – technical knowledge?
Complex interactions relied on a CGI script no one could figure out?
Login Systems were virtually unheard of?
Along came the CMS!
CMS systems started small & niched
Enabled rudimentary content management
The foundations of extensibility emerged
Platforms emerged:
WordPress
Drupal
Joomla
Magento
Enterprise caught up
Today’s CMS Landscape
The Web Forever Changed
Websites were easy and quick to deploy
Plug-in’s, extensions and other extensibility methods matured
Emergence of tens of thousands of “experts” and “agencies”
Sounds awesome!
The bad news…
Large install bases became targets for malicious individuals
Unpredictable updates between core software, plugins and extensions create
uncertainty for enterprises
Just how customizable are these platforms?
Major iterations result in costly infrastructure updates
Existing themes made the value of design decline
Many of those “agencies” have no idea WTF is going on!
But, let’s stay technical, for now
Today’s CMS
platforms are
integrated
frameworks
Display &
Administration play in
the same sandbox
Content types are
flexible, but still
based on the old
methodologies
But, let’s stay technical, for now
Extensibility
isn’t always
what it
seems…
The future isn’t integrated…
Today, content is consumed on many different mediums
Web, Mobile, Apps, OTT Devices
Current CMS platforms are designed off the shelf for web browsers (mobile or
desktop) only
Only with moderate modifications can these platforms work to fuel alternative
distribution methods
What does the future look like?
Separation of administration
function and logic from user
consumption
AKA: Decoupling
What is decoupling?
To make it simple: separation of your content management from the user
experience.
Why Decouple?
Security
Distribution
Front-end Flexibility
Lifespan
Unique Workflows
Third Party Integrations
And so much more…
Security
Decoupled = separation of powers
Integrated = exposure
More freedom to secure tightly
Distribution
Decoupled means distribution
flexibility
API connectivity enhances options
Multi-domain control
CMS2CMS
Flexible User
Experiences
Decoupling from administrative
portion allows for almost any front-
end technology
Enable front-end experience to be
separated from back-end business
logic
Remember, back-end tech and front-
end tech evolve at different speeds
Lifespan
Decoupled means longevity
Avoid technical debt
Goal: 5-7 years minimum
Unique Workflows
Every business is different
Mold your CMS to your workflow, not
the opposite
Consider it a valuable asset
Third Party Integrations
Easily integrate complex third
party systems
Tie legacy platforms into web
platform safely
Create complex workflows
between multiple systems
Economics of Decoupling
Slightly higher up-front costs
Realize savings with longevity of system
Predictable ongoing costs
Should You Decouple?
You are managing a company that distributes content to many channels,
including multiple domains
Your enterprise is concerned particularly about security, yet wants a full-
featured content management platform
You are frustrated by the unpredictable nature of the existing off-the-shelf
platforms
You are interested in a long-term solution with complete ownership
Case Study 1

Requirements:
Furniture retailer with multiple locations
Required custom inventory management system integration (system was in-
house proprietary)
Wanted comprehensive search and lookbook capabilities with foundation for e-
commerce
Case Study 1
The Solution:
