The Dimidiums Book One
Bound by Love
A fantasy romance novel by DM Yates
Meet Trevor Dittmar,
a Dimidium Tracker
Five foot seven, tanned,
muscled, piercing brown
eyes, and a braid down
his neck.
DIMIDIUMS
An ancient secret race of
half vampire/half human
achieved through
alchemy. Vampires
believe them to be an
abomination.
Why haven’t Dimidiums been discovered?
Well, as Trevor tells his family, “Don’t show your
special teeth in public.”
“There you are, Mateo. And here I thought I lost you. What
a fun game of hide and seek, but you look tired. Shall we
just say that I won?” Trevor stood confident, leaning on
one leg, his hand on his hip, his right leg out to the front.
Impeccably dressed as usual, not the tiniest hint of a
wrinkle, not even a scuff on his shoes, he wasn’t even
sweating. He ran his thumb across his forehead. “What I’m
wondering is, why? Why would you do this to us?”
Trevor and his father Stefan are famous
among their race as Trackers...
hunting the worst of human criminals
and the worst of vampires –
the Accurseds.
(The vampire) Efrom spun towards his prey, but his
target was no longer there. He glanced swiftly
around. A blur of neon green whirled speedier than
Efrom could in a perfect circle and stopped in front
of him.
“You’re too slow,” taunted Trevor.
“You’re a Tracker?”
“I am, and I must say, a very good one at that.”
“I have a right to live.”
“I have orders that say differently.” He kicked
swiftly, striking Efrom under the jaw.
Trevor faced the criminal that had been alluding Lainie,
another tracker. “You’re wanted dead or alive” said
Trevor. “Lainie would prefer the larger reward for your
capture alive, but I would rather kill you. One less human
on this Earth would give me great pleasure. Widdle girl,
why don’t you show the big bad man your widdle
fangs?”
Lainie looked uncertainly at Trevor, but he winked
encouragingly. She opened her mouth wide and her large
fangs protruded. The man jumped back, terrified.
Needless to say, Trevor and Stefan detest
the Accurseds and dislike humans until…
Trevor bumps into a human named Janna
and despite his hatred of humans, falls in love
with her and her luscious red lips.
Dimidiums have laws dealing with humans,
so Trevor tries to hide his affair with Janna.
“The way you love to provoke me and treat others of our kind, especially our
women, and your hatred of humans is frustrating,” said Lainie. “One of these
days karma will bite you in the ass and it will hurt. Then you’ll be sorry.”
“Mm. I’m sure to enjoy that. Delightful. I hope she’s a good biter. Do you have
her phone number?”
Lainie faced him and tossed her hair back. She stared him down with her
hands on her hips. “You just watch. I bet your punishment will be to fall in
love with a human woman and marry her.”
“Change the subject.”
“She’ll steal your heart, but you won’t want it back, and you’ll ache for the
rest of your life. Everything she says and does that hurts your feelings will
crush you, but even worse, everything she’ll do to gratify you will make you
hunger for her even more. You’ll wish you never met her, but you’ll never
want to let her go. And you know what? You’ll deserve every minute of that
stinging sweet and sour pain.”
His face turned stone-like. “Perhaps karma bit me already.”
Stefan is the best of all Trackers and he knows his son
is up to something. He soon discovers what it is.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, Janna stirred. Trevor kissed
her on the head. He sighed in satisfaction. Sex had never been as good
as it was with Janna, nor had he ever wanted so much sex from the
same woman. He watched her sleep when suddenly his instincts
kicked in. He dashed to the window and looked out, but no one was
there. He rushed to the front and checked. Barkley was hurrying to his
car.
Trevor dialed his phone.
“This is Stefan.”
“I’m seeing a human woman. Now you call Barkley off. You’re lucky I
didn’t kill him.”
“You’re not just seeing her.”
“Delete those pictures and stay out of my business.” He hung up.
By Dimidium law, Trevor and Janna are required
to marry, but Trevor’s afraid to reveal his vampire side to her.
Trevor tells Janna he’s taking her to meet his mother,
but doesn’t tell her they must marry.
Karla, Trevor’s mother, stepped forward, beaming at Janna. “You are
adorable.” Karla looked at Trevor. “She’ll be perfect for you. I couldn’t
have picked one better.”
Other women approached and surrounded her. Janna tightened her hold
on Trevor’s hand.
“Eine püppchen. Such a little doll. How old is she?” The blonde woman
stood about Janna’s height. Her deep blue eyes studied her and she ran
her hand gently down Janna’s cheek. “Such soft skin. Delicate, like Jeffrey
said. What an honor for Ulrich and me.”
“This is my sister-in-law Trinity,” said Trevor. “Ulrich’s wife. Janna’s 29.”
“Twenty-nine!” exclaimed Trinity. “So young. Karla, doesn’t she look like
my second daughter, Breanna? Look how sweet she is.”
Janna’s forced to marry Trevor in a basement ritual room and she’s
terrified, but Trevor is elated that she belongs to him.
Trevor knelt by the low altar, his hood covering most of his face. He
looked up at her when she entered, his face filled with delight and love.
This was the moment he had waited for his entire life, the moment he
would be sealed to a woman he truly loved and wanted, when his
loneliness would finally leave him. Dressed in red and maroon, she was a
vision of loveliness and elegance, and he couldn’t wait to take her in his
arms and show her how much he loved her.
Janna saw it differently. This was like some horror movie. A darkened
room, a black altar, hooded vampires prepared for a sacrificial rite. She
hoped she showed her total revulsion for his betrayal of her trust, for his
lies, for not giving her the right to say yes, for his forcing her to marry him.
She wanted all of them to grasp her fear of them by her tear stained eyes
and trembling lips.
Trevor takes Janna to Hawaii for their honeymoon,
but she runs away straight into the arms of an Accursed.
After jogging as far as she could, Janna stopped to catch her breath
hoping he still slept and that she’d put a good distance between them.
She heard rustling in the nearby ferns and glanced quickly at them.
Though she saw nothing, it was enough to make her start running again,
but an arm grasped her around her neck and tightened.
“All alone?” rasped a strange female voice. Her breath smelled foul, the
scent familiar, like old blood.
Oh my god! It’s one of them, out here. Janna struggled to free herself, but
the vampire held on.
“Why do you bother to resist? Don’t worry. The pain doesn’t last long and
then you’ll sleep the eternal sleep.”
Trevor stepped out from the vegetation and the vampire emitted a low
growl.
“I must admit, Janna, I’m at a loss here. You ran away from me.” Trevor
rubbed his thumb across his forehead. “I can’t explain how deeply that cuts
through my heart. You broke one of our most important rules. Humans must
not run away from their spouses. The penalty is death. You must choose. Do
you want this vile creature to end your existence, or do you want me to save
you to be judged in our court? I’m happy to kill this bloodsucker if you like.”
The Accursed laughed. “As if you could.”
“Am I talking to you? Janna, I want to save you, but if you find me so hideous
that you’d rather let this disgusting parasite have you, I won’t stop her.”
Janna mouthed to him, “Please, help.” A single tear rolled down her face.
“Let her go.” He moved to stand in front of them, still only in his khaki shorts,
his naked chest gleaming in the moonlight. His sight fixed solely on the
vampire.
She hissed and bent down, fangs at the ready, to bite Janna’s neck.
“I wouldn’t do that. I’m annoyed enough,” he said impassively.
Janna shuddered at the tone of his voice.
The vampire pulled back, intrigued by his lack of fear. “Are you offering
yourself instead?”
“I offer you nothing.” He thought for a moment. To the vampire he said, “Let
me deal with my wife, and then I’ll give you the time you deserve.” He gazed
into Janna’s eyes. “I dedicate these to you, because I’ve failed at showing you
how much you mean to me and at capturing your heart as you captured
mine.” He sang the beginnings of several of his favorite love songs, weaving
them together into one fluid melody. When he finished, he looked at the
Accursed. “It’s your turn.”
“Will you sing me to death?”
Trevor and Janna do avow their love for each other, but living in
his world is dangerous and unpredictable.
Can their marriage make it through Stefan’s attempt to have Janna killed?
Being cursed by a Wiccan? And running into more Accurseds? Perhaps…
But why was Trevor even attracted to a human woman and her lips?
Because Janna has a secret that even she doesn’t know. It’ll be revealed
in Books Two, Blood Lust.
