The automobile was first produced in America in the 1890s, but it was not until Henry Ford introduced the assembly line method of production that cars became affordable for the masses. Ford was able to reduce the price of the Model T to just $600 in 1908 due to the assembly line, and by paying workers $5 per day, enough to purchase a car. By 1920, Ford had sold millions of affordable Model T cars, transforming transportation and enabling the development of highways, suburbs, and a mobile society across America.
