The Nervous System at a GlanceChapter 12
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: A system responsible for coordinating all the activity of the body.THE BRAINTHE SPINAL CORDTHE NERVESTHE SENSES
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (CNS)PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (PNS)The Nervous System can be subdivided into the:
CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: Controls everything in the body. The CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM is made of the brain and the spinal cord.
THE BRAINMade up of more than 10 billion nerves. An organ that controls your emotions, your thoughts and every movement you make.Divided into four sections, but has (three) major parts and is protected by the skull.
THE THREE MAJOR PARTS of the BRAINTHE CEREBRUMTHE CEREBELLUMTHE BRAIN STEM
THE CEREBRUM: largest part of the brainThe cerebrum controls:Your thinkingYour MemoryYour SpeakingYour movement & identifies the information gathered by your sense organs.
THE CEREBELLUM:Is below & to the back of the cerebrumThe cerebellum controls your :BALANCE&POSTURE
THE BRAIN STEMConnects the brain to the spinal cord. The nerves in the brain stem control your:HEARTBEATBREATHINGBLOOD PRESSURE
THE SPINAL CORDThe SPINAL CORD sends messages to the brain. The SPINAL CORD is the part of the nervous system that connects the brain to the rest of the nervous system.
THE OUTER NERVOUS SYSTEMThe OUTER NERVOUS SYSTEM is made of the nerves and the sense organs. NERVES SENSEORGANS
ABOUT THE OUTER NERVOUS SYSTEMCarries messages between the central nervous system and the rest of the body. The OUTER NERVOUS SYSTEM’s job is to connect the CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM to the rest of the body.
VERY IMPORTANT INFONerves send messages to everything from the brain. If there was no nervous system, you're heart wouldn't be told to beat, your legs wouldn't be told to walk and your lungs wouldn't be told to expand an, collapse.Things wouldn't be able to send messages to the brain either, such as taste buds (no taste) skin, (no feeling,) eyes (no sight) and so on.
