The Parody for Classroom Use WMWP Summer Institute Thursday July 20, 2006 Michael B.
Humor in the Classroom What is its value and how do you use it? Write for 5 minutes. Share with your group for 5 minutes.
What is parody? A parody is “a literary or musical work in which the style of an author or work is closely imitated for comic effect or in ridicule.”  Satire is “a literary work holding up human vices and follies to ridicule or scorn.”  (definitions courtesy of www.m-w.com)
Justification In his essay “Using Parody to Teach Some Writing Elements,” John Hurley described parody as “an effective pedagogical device [that] provides a neat way of teaching recognition of, and appreciation for, form.”
Justification Reading or writing a parody increases understanding of the original work, and puts it in a new perspective. What literary skills are strengthened by comparing an original and its parody?
How I use parody with my 11 th  grade Drama/English class Read Tennessee Williams’s  The Glass Menagerie Analyze the four characters  Read Durang’s “For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls” Write a response paper on how this parody reflects/changes/exaggerates the original Write a parody of a play we read in class this semester Perform the parodies for the whole class Write a reflection of the process, investigating what you did to make your parody
Your Turn Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “A Psalm of Life”  Oliver Wendell Holmes’s “Parody of ‘A Psalm of Life’”  Discuss this parody with your group Now write your own parody of the poem on your table
