The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved
Conventions
   Genre:- Pop/Indie
   Conventions. . .
-Mix between performance and narrative based videos
-Artists wear casual clothing, such as t-shirts and jeans
-Lighting is usually low-key or stage lighting
   -Panning shots
   -Artist/band shown throughout the video
-Use of extreme close ups and long shots are popular

It is both a performance and narrative based video, the narrative part of the video
links to the lyrics throughout.

The Man Who Can’t Be Moved music video meets the majority of
these conventions that are for this genre of music.
Mise-en-scene
Clothing worn by all members of the band is causal – matches genre.
The lighting is natural daylight when on the street and then lower key during the
parking lot.
The ‘main’ character is the lead singer who is the one who the story is based on.
During the video you see a sleeping bag as soon as it is mentioned in the lyrics, this
shows that the narrative is links to the lyrics. There is also a watch which helps the
audience relate to the passing of time.
Two different locations used, one is the street which the lyrics link to and the other is
a car park where the whole band are seen.
Camera
Variation of camera shots and distances.
Panning shots and tracking shots show the lead singer is the ‘main’ character who
the narrative is based on.
The camera shots keep switching between the street and the car park which
meets the convention of the genre.
Has camera shots of other people on the street but then swithes straight back to
the lead singer or band straight away to remind the audience that he’s the main
character of the narrative.
Editing
The pace of the editing matches the tempo of the song.
Invisible editing between shots of the same location.
Some jump cuts between the street and the car park to show the change from
narrative to performance and vice-versa.
Near the end there is time lapsed used to help the audience relate to the passing
of time, one of the main ones used is a watch which shows this clearly.
How do we respond?
The clothing that the characters are wearing are casual which helps us
associate with them more which makes us sympathise with the lead
singer/main character.
It is a built up urban area for the narrative, yet we feel as though the main
character is isolated, this helps emphasise who is important (him) and that it is
his story, this makes the audience concentrate on the video and see it from his
point of view.
There are many close-ups which show his emotions and expressions of him
being venerable, this is also shown by his body language, which the audience
recognise instantly which then alters the way they respond to the main
character.

All of these meet the generic
                                            conventions and relate to the
                                            themes which are used by
                                            many song videos from this
                                            genre.
