Matter is composed of atoms, which are the fundamental building blocks, consisting of a nucleus made of protons and neutrons, and surrounded by negatively charged electrons in an electron cloud. The number of protons and electrons in an atom are equal, balancing its charge to zero, while losing or gaining electrons results in ions with a net charge. Isotopes are variations of the same element that differ in the number of neutrons but share the same number of protons.
