The Ultimate
Guide to
Corrugated
Boxes

INTRODUCTION
Corrugated boxes are an essential part of modern
commerce, used to transport products safely and
securely from one place to another. They are used in a
wide range of industries, from food and beverage to
electronics, and are a critical component of supply chain
logistics. In this guide, we'll explore the world of
corrugated boxes and provide you with the information
you need to make informed decisions about packaging
solutions for your business.
HISTORY OF CORRUGATED
BOXES:
Corrugated boxes have been in use for over a century,
with the first patent for a corrugated paperboard box
filed in 1871. They were originally used as a lightweight
alternative to wooden crates for shipping fruit and
produce, but soon became popular in other industries as
well. During World War II, corrugated boxes became
even more important, as they were used to transport
supplies and equipment to soldiers on the front lines.
MANUFACTURING
PROCESS:
Today, corrugated boxes are manufactured using a
highly efficient process that involves several steps. First,
the raw materials are sourced, which typically include a
mixture of recycled paper, virgin paper, and other
additives. The paper is then formed into a corrugated
medium using a series of fluted rollers, and this medium
is then glued to two flat sheets of paperboard to create a
corrugated board. The board is then cut and folded into
the desired shape and size to create a finished box.
TYPES OF CORRUGATED BOXES:
Regular Slotted
Containers
Half-Slotted
Containers
Full Overlap Slotted
Containers
REGULAR SLOTTED
CONTAINERS (RSCS):
These are the most common type of corrugated box,
and are characterized by four flaps that meet at the
center of the box when folded. RSCs can be used for a
wide range of products and are easily stackable.
HALF-SLOTTED
CONTAINERS (HSCS):
These boxes are similar to RSCs, but have only one set
of flaps, making them easier to open and close. They are
commonly used for larger or heavier items.
FULL OVERLAP SLOTTED
CONTAINERS (FOLS):
FOLs are similar to RSCs, but have extra flaps that
extend over the top and bottom of the box, providing
extra protection for the contents.
PRINTING OPTIONS:
Corrugated boxes can be customized with logos,
branding, and other graphics using a variety of printing
techniques. Flexographic printing is the most common
method, which involves using flexible printing plates to
transfer ink onto the box. Lithographic printing, which is
similar to traditional offset printing, is also used for high-
quality graphics. Digital printing is a newer technique
that is becoming more popular, as it allows for greater
flexibility and faster turnaround times.
