Editor's Notes

  • #2: Since the first major tablet arrived less than 3 years ago, we’ve seen more and more waysthat mobile devices can be used in extension and in extension offices. Let’s check some of them out. Talking Larry the Bird on next slide.
  • #3: Talking Larry -Good morning everyone. Welcome to the Smartphone Session. (if there is such a thing!)I'm so excited to accompany Dennis here to share some ways that the mobile tools you keep seeing advertised on TV can be used.Excuse me, breakfast was a long tie ago! I could sing for you now! Anyway, Dennis... take it away!Today we have several knowledgeable people here to share some of the apps that are out there for smartphones and tablets. Namely DROID and iPhones.Excuse me, I need a little bite to eat to keep my energy level up this early in the morning.Ahh! Now I feel better. I think I could sing for you now, want to hear me?Anyway, these guys really want to hear from you as to what kind of app you would see useful on the farm.So sit tight and let’s see what they know!
  • #4: But first, let’s review some of the mobile devices out there. The first smartphones were devices that mainly combined the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA )like a Palm Pilot or IPod and a mobile phone or camera phone. Today's models also serve to combine the functions of portable media players, low-end compactdigital cameras, pocket video cameras, and GPS navigation units. Modern smartphones typically also include high-resolution touchscreens, web browsers that can access and properly display standard web pages rather than just mobile-optimized sites, and high-speed data access via Wi-Fi and mobile broadband. One of the most significant differences of feature phones is that the advanced application programming interfaces (APIs) on smartphones for running third-party applications[4] can allow those applications to have better integration with the phone's OS and hardware than is typical with feature phones. The most common mobile operating systems (OS) used by modern smartphones include Apple'siOS, Google's Android, Microsoft's Windows Phone, Nokia's Symbian, RIM'sBlackBerry OS, and embedded Linux distributions such as Maemo and MeeGo. Such operating systems can be installed on many different phone models, and typically each device can receive multiple OS software updates over its lifetime.Types of mobile devices- smartphones (blackberry, droid, iphone, slide phones, etc.- tablets, iPad, Sony______, hp _______,-e-readers , nook, kindle, etc.- GPS/GIS- cameras
