Thermodyamics Introduction of basic application
Introduction
Teaching Scheme
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 This course will provide an understanding of the basic principles of thermodynamics
which is a must for an understanding of major fields of mechanical engineering systems.
 To understand the basic terminologies and basic concepts of thermodynamics such as
system, processes, and cycles and about the thermodynamic properties emerging out of
the law of thermodynamics.
 To apply the principles of thermodynamics to Mechanical Engineering applications.
Introduction
Objectives of Thermodynamics
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 Unit-1 Fundamental Concepts
 Unit-2 Law of Perfect Gases
 Unit-3 Thermodynamics Process on Gases
 Unit-4 Law of Thermodynamics
 Unit-5 Thermodynamics Cycles
Introduction
Units of Thermodynamics
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
“Thermodynamics is an axiomatic science which deals with the relations among heat,
work and properties of system which are in equilibrium.”
OR
“Thermodynamics is the science of the regularities governing processes of energy
conversion.”
OR
“Thermodynamics is the science that deals with the interaction between energy and
material systems.”
Introduction
Introduction on Thermodynamics
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
Introduction
Basic concept of Heat Transfer
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 Thermal Contact is when two
substances can affect each other's
temperature.
 Thermal Equilibrium is when two
substances in thermal contact no
longer transfer heat.
 Thermal Expansion takes place when a
substance expands in volume as it
gains heat. Thermal contraction also
exists.
Introduction
Basic concept of Heat Transfer
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 Conduction is when heat flows through
a heated solid.
 Convection is when heated particles
transfer heat to another substance, such
as cooking something in boiling water.
 Radiation is when heat is transferred
through electromagnetic waves, such as
from the sun.
 Insulation is when a low-conducting
material is used to prevent heat
transfer.
Introduction
System, Surrounding & Boundary
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 System :- “Selected quantity of matter or region in space for
thermodynamic study is known as system.”
 Surrounding :-“Everything outside the system, which interacts with the
system, is known as Surrounding of the system.”
 Boundary :- “The real or imaginary surface that separates the system from
its surrounding is known as Boundary.”

Introduction
Thermodynamics System
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 Open system- If the system features the exchange of both energy and matter with
its surroundings, it can be called an open system.
 Closed system- If the system can only exchange energy with its surroundings and
cannot exchange matter with it is known as closed system.
 Isolated system- An isolated system is a thermodynamic system that cannot
exchange energy or matter with its surroundings
Introduction
Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics
Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 Thermodynamics, basically entails four laws :
 The Zeroth law deals with thermal equilibrium and establishes a concept of
temperature.
Introduction

Jignesh Chhatbar Mechanical Department
 Thermometer- all Industries
 Calorimeter- Food, Fuels Industries
 Heat Exchanger- all Industries deal with fluids
 Air Conditioning- all Industries and house hold
 Room Heaters- all Industries and house hold
 Refrigerator- all Industries and house hold
