You don’t know how the completed jigsaw puzzle looks like. So what do you do? You randomly pick up two puzzle pieces and see whether they fit. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don’t. This is what we call a bottom-up approach i.e. process-oriented. It’s somewhat like life, you experiment a bit and see whether things are a good fit for you or not. As you match the relevant puzzle pieces, you slowly get to see how the finished jigsaw puzzle could look like. You start to work your way toward that image allowing you to place each puzzle piece faster and with less I
- 3. errors. You also slowly start to transition from a bottom-up approach to a more efficient top-down approach i.e. working toward a goal. Again, somewhat similar to real life. The thing, however, is that the jigsaw puzzle cannot be completed, because it’s of infinite size. Again, just like life. Because the finished jigsaw puzzle is of infinite size, your guess about the “final image” also changes slowly over time as you put each puzzle piece together. First you thought the finished image would look like a cat, now you think it looks more like a leopard, and so on. As you become more and more accurate of how that final image could look like, you become more and more efficient in placing and connecting the relevant puzzle pieces. But no matter how certain you are of the final image, if enough time and development passes, it will change inevitably. One might, then, apply a well-known ancient rule: “I know that I know nothing.” — Socrates
