The TSH test is usually the first blood test performed to diagnose hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, is the key hormone used to diagnose these thyroid conditions. An abnormally low TSH level suggests hyperthyroidism, as the thyroid is producing too much hormone and shuts down TSH production. An abnormally high TSH level suggests hypothyroidism, as the thyroid is not functioning properly and cannot respond to elevated TSH levels by producing enough thyroid hormone. Additional tests may be needed if the initial TSH test results are abnormal.
