Coming very soon… Googlisation Links to digital content Service coherency w/ Zetoc & SUNCAT (D2D) Personalisation tools/APIs ‘ My Bibliography’ Tagging facilities Recommmender functions TOCs web service And in the next 18 months… a REST based stateless interface a new database de-duplication on the FRBR work level
Towards re-use of services…. “ Librarians need to be enabled to re-use services at ‘the point of need’; this involves embedding library services in the librarian’s / users’ own space(s) or in other services and implies liberation of library data as a resource to be re-used in ways not predetermined by the library, the service or the system vendor.”

From ‘service’ to “gravitational hub” “ How can we aggregate demand through web presence? If more users are exposed to library collections, the collections will be used more… but the fragmentation of library resources reduces their gravitational pull. Libraries have to compete for the attention of their own users” (Lorcan Dempsey’s Weblog)

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Thanks David, It’s a bit ironic that I’ve been asked to provide the ‘sector’ perspective here, because I do still suffer a bit from impostor syndrome. As a some of you will know I am neither a librarian or an archivist, but joined Mimas a year ago to take over strategic responsibility for Library and Archival services, including Copac and the Archives Hub, as well as new projects such as D2D and leading on Personalisation work across the organisation. I actually come from a teaching a research background with 15 years of teaching/lecturing across a wide number of curricula subjects and ability ranges. I actually lived in Michigan during this period, and became involved in a number of NSF/NEH digital humanities and NSDL initiatives – so my credentials in terms of understanding ‘digital libraries’ came from very much a different perspective. The projects I worked in in the states were very much about privileging context of use – specifically teaching and research – borne of realisation that LOC/American Memory had an unbelievable wealth of digital content available, and both students and teachers found the catalogue nigh on impossible to navigate. It was very difficult to surface content relevant to learning and teaching objectives. – unless going to an exhibition or pre-determined portal where sifting is done for them. In the early days, before there was ‘web 2.0’ we devised tools to create ‘secondary repositories’; user-generated content that could augment and enrich understanding of and access to digital objects. Now I find myself as strategic manager for a digital library in the much more traditional sense, and I also find, very happily, that I’ve taken over the services like Copac at a critical point in their history, as we explore and embrace 2.0 technologies that are potentially transformative. Today I am going to talk a little bit about some of the developments that are currently underway for Copac that relate to some of the issues outlined by the TiLE project. But mainly I am going to respond to the ‘pain points’ of creating context and enabling contribution identified by TiLE, and highlight some of the key challenges and opportunities as I see them from the ‘JISC service and Copac perspective.’
