We do not dress up
very often in Poland
There are just few
occasions such a
carrnival time and
Christmas caroling
time.
Let me tell you
about caroling
time at first. It
has a rich
history .
St. Stephen’s Day
• St. Stephen’s Day in
Polish customs is
known as the second
holiday. This is a day
for visiting and
expressing Christmas
greetings. And when
night begins to fall,
you can hear stamping
and jingling, and then
Christmas carol singing
outside.
Jasełka
They entertain their
neighbors with caroling
and thus make money
and/or received
something sweet to eat.
They usually stay within
their neighborhood, but
sometimes go to other
sections or even
different villages.
In Polish tradition there are several forms of Christmas caroling, two
(Szopka and Herody) of which are also called Jasełka. The Szopka is a
manger scene that portrays the birth of Jesus and is carried by
young boys from house to house.
Carolers
• Dressed in special costumes they are: King Herod, field
marshal, a knight, a soldier, an angel, a devil, death, a J-e-w,
St. Mary, shepherds, sometimes Three Kings and an
accordionist.
Pastoral songs
• They sing pastoral songs, carols, and when let into the house,
play scenes from King Herod’s life. Oration and songs vary and
depend on to whom they are addressed – to the owner of the
house, to a young girl about to be married, to a widow, etc.
Caroilng with a star
• At the conclusion,
they are offered
refreshments and
some money. No
less popular is
caroling with a
Szopka – and with
a star. Usually,
those are carried
by three caroling
teenagers. They
are given some
money. Author: EvelineaErato©
Caroling with Turon
• The oldest form of
Christmas caroling in
Poland was to go
caroling
with Turon. One of the
participants would be
dressed in a type of
animal costume and
mask depicting a wild
ox or tur, a large animal
that caused great
damage to villages
throughout Europe.
Spreading the good news of Christ’s
birth
• This was a common walking of
dressed young people from
house to house, they spread
the good news of Christ’s birth
by singing carols. Often it
looked like this: young people
with a man dressed as a
disguised bull (tour, that is
fantastic character that
resembles both a bull and a
goat) were walking around the
village or town singing carols.
Biblical story of Christmas
• Another group of carolers played biblical story of Christmas. There
were such characters as grandfather (Dziad) and grandmother
(Baba), magicians, shepherdess, Death and the Devil. There was a
belief that misfortune will come to the family whose house was
omitted by carolers. This belief is now disappearing.
