Visteon has been researching time-of-flight (ToF) gesture interaction technology for use in vehicles. They integrated a ToF camera system into a test vehicle to investigate use cases. The ToF system can accurately detect spatial gestures, hand poses, touch inputs, and distinguish between the driver and passenger. It enables a more natural human-machine interface with potential applications like controlling infotainment and opening windows without physical contact. While progress has been made, future research needs to further explore passive gestures and driver monitoring capabilities.
