Timer Training Level 1 The basics
What is a Timer? A timer is in its most basic form is a set of relay contacts that can be set and controlled at pre-set times by the operator. This means that process can start and stop at a required time range to suit a particular application.
How does a timer work? A timer works by applying a supply voltage to the coil ( this must be specified by the user), the relay contacts will then turn on or stay off (depending on the function chosen) until the set time has elapsed, it will then turn off or on. It works in the same fashion as a normal relay, with the same contact configurations (SPDT, DPDT,3PDT,4PDT) but the contacts are time controlled.
Timer Functions On Delay = when voltage is applied to the timer the relay contacts do not change state (on/off) until the set time has elapsed. Off Delay = when voltage is applied to the timer the relay changes state (ON) immediately and stays on until the set time has elapsed.
Continued Flicker (Flasher) = when voltage is applied to the timer the relay contact will change state (ON) for the set time it will then turn off for the same set time and turn on again. It will repeat this process of ON and OFF until the voltage is removed from the timer.
Types of Timer Plug in = this is simply a timer that plugs in to a relay base. The pin configuration is the same as that of standard relays 8, 11 pin octal and 14 pin and can be used in the same bases. Din Rail Timers = a timer that clips on to DIN rail.
Where are timers used? Lighting circuits, where a button can be pushed once and the lights stay on for a certain amount of time then turn off. Used in flood lighting when people pay for One hour of pitch time for instance. Heating systems, when a room only Needs heating while people are present, This can be operated by a door switch. Water pumps, allowing a pump to run only For a certain amount of time.

Quiz What is a DIN Rail Timer? How many relay contacts does a TV49 have? How many Amps can be switched through a TU93 relay contact? What is the part number for a DIN Rail timer with one relay contact and a supply voltage of 230vac? What is the part number for a plug in timer 8 pin with a supply voltage of 24vdc? How many relay contacts does a TU93 DIN rail timer have?
