Tip burn
of paddy
INTRODUCTION
Tip burn is defined as a browning of plant tissues, including
leaf margins and tips, and yellowing or darkening of veins
which may lead to eventual wilting and abscission of the leaf.
Stagnation of water or excessive moisture by flooding in the
field may cause decay or rotting of fibrous root of plants
resulting into wilting. Primarily due to accumulation of toxic
materials around the root and base of stem and also due to
non availability of nutrients.
CAUSE
Actual cause is not known yet.
Probable causes may be:
 Less or no oxygen supply.
 Excessive moisture or water stagnation by flooding may cause decay of
fibrous root resulting into wilting.
 Due to attack of trips.
 Scorching effect of fertilizer.
 Lack of available nitrogen.
 Air pollutants like CO, Sulphur dioxide, ethylene, fluoride in water.
SYMPTOMS
 Drying of leaves along the margin and at the tip.
 Affected leaves show lack of luster.
 Shows tendency to bronzing and later become scorched
at tip.
 Drying progress and completely whole leaf dries.
 Leaf and stalk turn brown.
 Yellow patches and dried leaves may be seen scattered
throughout the field.
 Tip necrosis and yellowing.
 In advance stages whole plant dry and wilt.
MANAGEMENT
 Clipping and burning of tips of seedling before
transplanting will help to avoid invisible eggs laid on leaf
tips.
 Green manuring.
 Draining the flooded water at early stages of crop.
 Apply 30-40 kg/ha of ammonium sulphate.
 Providing good aeration to the root.
