Tips for Teaching Creativity
 The author of more than 80 articles on 
leadership, learning, and education, Douglas 
“Doug” Reeves is the founder of the Leadership 
and Learning Center and the Center for 
Successful Leadership. An in-demand presenter 
and lecturer as well, Douglas Reeves shares his 
insights through the popular blog 
ChangeLeaders.com. 
Although many people believe that creativity is 
an inherent trait, educational and thought 
leaders have found that a culture of 
experimentation can in fact help nurture this 
quality.
 Because most assessment systems depend 
on a quantifiable result, the prioritization of 
creativity requires educators to implement 
a system of trying and revising before 
presenting a final answer or project. In 
doing so, teachers and trainers show that it 
is acceptable to attempt something that 
may need reworking, and that original 
ideas are a worthwhile part of the process. 
Teamwork and collaboration also play a 
key part in teaching creativity, as new ideas 
thrive in the face of analysis and feedback.
 Discussing an idea requires a student to 
take in information, synthesize and 
analyze, and present his or her thoughts 
coherently. Teachers and trainers can 
also encourage this by inviting feedback 
on classroom processes, thus reinforcing 
the idea that students' original ideas and 
insights have value and can impact their 
world.
