Forts were important for fur traders as they provided places to get supplies, sell furs, and gain information about local trapping areas. Canoes called Montreal canoes that were 30-40 feet long and held 8-16 voyageurs were used to transport furs and supplies. These canoes were made from birch bark sealed with spruce gum. Traders would carry their canoes over land between bodies of water using portages, some as long as 8 miles. In addition to fur and economic impacts, the fur trade helped open up and explore the western territories by establishing travel routes and landmarks.
