Top Tips for Searching • You can do most of your searching from home/before you get to the library. • Get your keywords and phrases before you begin to search, you can always amend and add to them as your search progresses. • If you cannot find what you want check you are using the right search tool and that your search terms are right. • Think broad and narrow. If you are retrieving no results your search terms may be too narrow, broaden the concept. • If you are retrieving to many results you should narrow the concept. • Keep some kind of a diary in whatever format suits you so you know what you have looked for. • You will be recommended readings by your tutors. This is a good place to start your research. Most course reading lists are available from the library web page. • Tutors sometimes recommend additional readings in lectures that are not on the lists, make a note of them. • When you have found the item that you want make a note in your diary of the location and the shelfmark this will enable you to find it on the library shelves. • Some books and most journal articles are available electronically. • Use a reference manager like Endnote Web to help you keep track of your references and for formatting your bibliography Sam Aston Tuesday, 23 August 2011 toptipsforsearching-110823062841-phpapp01.doc
